The NRA’s jack-booted thugs

By DOUG THOMPSON

I’m a longtime gun-owner, a lifelong hunter and a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment that protects the right of Americans to own and bear arms.

I also was, until recently, a member of the National Rifle Association. I turned in my membership card after the midterm elections because of the organization’s unabashed support of crooked Congressman Tom DeLay (R-TX) and racist Senator George Allen (R-VA).

Yes, Bill and Hillary lie

By DOUG THOMPSON

Hillary Clinton’s campaign staffers, as well as the candidate herself, are up in arms because former supporter David Geffen called Ms. Clinton “a liar.”

Geffen, once a major contributor to the Clintons, now supports Brack Obama. The Clintonites claim he was put up by the Obama campaign to smear the carpet bagging Senator from New York.

Business as usual on Capitol Hill

By DOUG THOMPSON

Yep, things sure are different in Washington since the Democrats took over the Hill and turned the place into “the most ethical Congress in history.” No more gridlock, no more fatcat lobbyists buying access, no more talking the talk but not walking the walk.

Wait a minute. Let’s look again.

A reign of error on Capitol Hill

By DOUG THOMPSON

Here we are, nearly a month and 10 days into the Democratic reign of error on Capitol Hill, well past the vaunted “100 hours” of legislative activism, and the legislative branch of the federal government is, as usual, mired in gridlock.

“In war, truth is the first casualty,” said Greek dramatist Aeschylus somewhere around 500 BC.

“All warfare is based on deception,” proclaimed fifth century Chinese General Sun Tzu in his military manual, The Art of War.

Lies, damn lies and George W. Bush

By DOUG THOMPSON

One word will define forever the sad and despicable legacy of George W. Bush.

Liar.

Most politicians lie. They call it “spin” or “positioning” or “situation analysis” but evasion of truth becomes part of political life.

Yet lying is so ingrained into the Bush Administration that it now is impossible to accept, on face value, anything the President or his appointees say.

Bush’s plan to destroy America

By DOUG THOMPSON

The absolute and unrelenting takeover of the government of the United States by George W. Bush continues – right under the noses of the new Democratic leadership of Congress and in outright defiance of the wishes of the American voters who sent a clear mandate for change in last year’s elections.

Judging war and protest by the numbers

By DOUG THOMPSON

Lyndon Johnson told the nation,

“Have no fear of escalation.

I am trying everyone to please.

Though it isn’t really war,

We’re sending fifty thousand more,

To help save Vietnam from Vietnamese.”

Tom Paxton’s lyrics from 40 years ago came back to mind this weekend as thousands upon thousands of protesters gathered on both coasts to protest yet another questionable war.

I jumped off the old troop ship,

And sank in mud up to my hips.

I cussed until the captain called me down.
