Tim Russert, NBC’s Washington Bureau Chief and moderator of Meet The Press, died Friday of a massive heart attack while taping a segment of Sunday’s news interview program. He was 58.

His sudden and shocking death left many in Washington and the journalism profession stunned and searching for the right words.

In a broadcast news business that too often has become shrill and shallow, Russert remained the steady professional, a man dedicated to his craft — always prepared, always poised, always ready to catch a subject in a lie, a moment of weakness or a flash of hypocrisy.

He leaves a hole in the NBC News division that cannot be easily filled. He will be missed.
