If “the B-1 bomber’s targeting gear is incapable of detecting friendly marking devices of the type used by U.S. ground forces in the June 9 operation” then this incident is the fault of the mission planners, not the dead soldiers or the bomber crew. How can you do close air support without having equipment that tells the flyers who is friendly forces on the ground?

As usual, the fault resides at a higher level, so it’s time to start handing out medals and shipping home flag-draped coffins.
