"Hours past a self-imposed deadline"...

Hm. You know, when they write speeding ticket laws, they always put in a penalty clause. "Violators of this statue shall be fined not less than..., imprisoned for not more than..., lose their license for..., a misdemeanor..."

But they never write penalty clauses into laws that apply to themselves. What happens if they miss the deadline? Not much. CNN and CSPAN and FOX whine about it. That's all.

Now, if they put into their laws penalty clauses for themselves, that would be much more interesting. "If a balanced budget is not passed by X at midnight, warrants shall issue for the arrest of..."...

Even the Constitution doesn't have much in the way of penalty clauses. "Congress shall make no law..." it says in the Bill of Rights, but lists no punishment for Congress should they actually do so.

I have in my own dealings seen this, that an agent of the law freely admitted violating their own law and had added, "But because there is no penalty, it's okay" (paraphrased).

So yeah, it's one law for us, and one for them. Happy Days are not here again. Enjoy your 14th b'ak'tun.

"Spending cuts totaling $24 billion over two months aimed at the Pentagon and domestic programs would be deferred."

Translation: "Because we we can't agree, we'll just ck the can farther down the road. In the meantime, we'll print more money!"

Hell of a way to run a country, eh?

As I've said, this nonsense is yet MORE evidence...as if we needed any...that our current form of government (where real power is split in so many ways among so many deeply entrenched constituencies) simply doesn't work in the modern era. What's needed is meaningful Constitutional reform...NOT more "brinkmanship" nonsense.

What's truly amazing is that WE continue to tell the rest of the world how to run its business! The truth is that our current form of government has become little more than a laughingstock run by a bunch of bumbling fools.

Or, to put it another way, the United States has now become a country that projects everything that it is not, while condemning everything that it is.
