The entry on “thinking about liberalism” is right on. Liberalism is a product of 18th century ‘enlightenment’ which produced the American Revolution. It’s basis is that persons count and are the basis of an “ocracy” built upon the demos – the Greek man/woman. If man is important so are his ideas. So freedom of that individual to think and express and act is central to liberalism. It also suggests that government should be concerned not only with protecting that freedom but working for the individual’s quality of life. In other words working for ‘the common good.’ 20 and 21st century Democrats should be proud of that tradition as well as the label “liberal.”
