Good for you Doug!!

But what about those of us who enjoy the drink yet have for over 40 years controlled the need for it on a constant bases. I don’t see alcohol as a bad thing as I control its use not its use controlling me. I enjoy the occasional high and the health benefits it has been proven scientifically in having a long and healthy life. Be it a good dark lager, a good red wine, vodka or sweet whiskey, moderation is the key to the health benefits of alcohol. At the age of 61 I'm not about to quit now buddy! :)

Congratulations Doug. Yours is an inspiring life and a lesson to all that having fun, enjoying life, and here and there imposing deserved discomfort upon the comfortable can be celebrated without recreational chemicals such as alcohol. You've also demonstrated this in a sanctimony free zone known as CHB. Thanks, and may you and Amy enjoy the days.

I am extremely impressed with both of you for your commitment to sobriety. Both my parents lived and died under the shadow of alcohol. My Mother had so many DUIs and ex-husbands in her life to fill the Washington Cathedral many times over. I used to drive her and many others to the weekly meetings in Malibu. None of them stayed sober even between meetings.

I wish I could describe the feeling in my chest prior to an occasion when a celebration meant a family gathering. The pain began very mild and the family could laugh at missing a complete Christmas, Easter and I was in my teens before I realized Mother's Day was on Sunday. The pain became almost undescribable when my kids became involved watching Grandma lying on the floor rather than have to face a treasured birthday.

I envy the family that has a recovering alcoholic. I lost another cousin this week and it was the second one who chose alcohol over life. Our family knows better than to spend time searching for the reason that so many musically talented men and women drank themselves to death.

Hat's off to the winners of those glorious coins. Others here would give their right arm to have a loved one receive one.
