Saying former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is “the man we need to lead America,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie jumped into the 2012 Presidential race Tuesday not as a candidate but as an endorser.
A week after he decided — once again — not to seek the nomination himself, Christie turned power broker and gave Romney an important boost in his bid to lead the GOP charge to unseat President Barack Obama in 2012.
Romney, Chrisie told a Tuesday afternoon press conference in Hanover, New Hampshire, before that evening’s GOP debate, is “the best person to be able to articulate Republican values and defeat Barack Obama. Mitt Romney is the man we need to lead America, and we need him now.”
Christie was courted heavily by social conservatives and tea party activists to run for President but his decision to stay on the sidelines gives Romney a much-needed boost with both the GOP’s right-wing base and the fatcat political donors who have waited to see what the New Jersey governor would do.
