A new poll shows 86 percent of Americans think the American economy is a mess and more than half still blame former President George W. Bush for the hard times.
The Associated Press-GfK found 51 percent blaming Bush for the nation’s poor economy while 31 percent say it is Obama‘s fault.
American confidence in Obama is slipping, especially among Democrats. His re-elect numbers dropped another point to 47 percent. Among Democrats, his rating as a “strong leader” has dropped nine points since May — down to 76 percent from 85 percent. Among Americans overall, Obama’s “strong leader” rating has dropped 14 points — from a high of 65 percent following the killing of Osama bin Laden to 51 percent.
When it comes to handling of the economy, Obama’s approval rating from Democrats fell from 65 to 58 percent with Democrats and from 15 to nine percent among Republicans. Overall, 63 percent of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy.
Still, as bad as Obama’s numbers are, the President fares better than Congress — where more Americans blame Republicans but still have some wrath for Democrats.
And 75 percent now believe the country is heading in the wrong direction — a 12 point increase from 63 percent in June.
