OAKLAND & LOS ANGELES–After former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle was sentenced to two years in prison for the New Year’s Day 2009 shooting death of 22-year old Oscar Grant on Friday, protesters gathered in Downtown Oakland to express outrage and sadness over the sentence. Youth Radio’s Haldun Morgan was on the scene at 6th Avenue between 16th and 17th streets, where police surrounded and detained protesters who’d been heading for the Fruitvale BART station where Grant was killed.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that most of the 152 people arrested on Friday have been sent home and are waiting to find out whether prosecutors will charge them.
