President Barack Obama, his Presidency drowning in a sea of oil, heads back to the Gulf Coast today for photo ops to try and shore up his his standing with a public that is increasingly fed up with what they see as his tepid response to the massive oil spill and environmental disaster.
Obama, under fire for what many consider a lackluster response to the mounting crisis, now claims he is “furious” and is scrapping plans for an overseas junket.
But critics see Obama’s latest visit to the oil-covered region as just another carefully-scripted photo op that will have little effect on the spill triggered when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20 and killed 11 workers.
Obama has come under fire for not showing enough emotion or compassion for those killed or a region that faces economic and environmental ruin from the disaster.
“I would love to spend a lot of my time venting and yelling at people,” Obama said on CNN’s Larry King Live Thursday, “but that’s not my job. My job is to solve this problem.”
Yet there may be little the government can actually do to solve the problem. Oil spill experts say the feds lack the experience or resources to actually shop the millions of gallons of oil spewing from a rupture a mile deep in the Gulf.
