Congress is set to vote on proposals to let gays serving in the military out of the closet and allow them to serve openly with an end to the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

A bill by Pennsylvania Rep. Patrick Murphy could reach the House floor for a vote today. The legislation is a compromise with the White House with Pentagon backing and would give the military as much time as it wants to life the ban.

“We need to get this done and we need to get it done now,” Murphy says.

In the Senate, the Armed Services Committee will consider an identical bill sponsored by Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate say they have the votes to pass the measure.

The US Military has usually been well ahead of the curve when it comes to removing discriminatory practices in the ranks.

However, I’m shocked and saddened that it has taken our military this long to get rid of such a blatant scourge on our Service. Indeed, most other western military services go rid of all this horrifically discriminatory nonsense DECADES ago.

And while it now appears that our resident homophobes have lost yet another battle in their bigoted war against homosexuals, I can’t help but remain angry over the number of absolutely excellent people that have been forced out of the Service over the years because of such systemically discriminatory foolishness.

I wonder if there is a provision in the bill that would now allow those persons so discredited to once again proudly serve their nation? If not, there certainly should be.

Not surprising given the revelation by Wayne Madsen that Obama and Emanuel are both long standing members of Chicago’s oldest gay bathhouse
