I'm waiting for gun control to come out of the White House. Bush will fix everything with more government controls on any subject. But he prays instead using his brain to protect all of us.

I keep hearing on the television coverage that gun contol must be the answer. We all know that guns kill all by themselves. They often throw themselves into the hands of a deranged human and simply kill others. Had one human at the university been armed and had taken out the shooter, 30 lives would be saved. That 2 hour delay is where the problem was. They had time to close down the university including the dorms and done a search for the killer of the first two in the dorm.

Watching the coverage by the Police Chief was awful. He came off as an idiot. Our security is now blaming the video games which of course will mean government control over the games.

Sandy, while I agree that VA Tech security dropped the ball by not canceling glasses, your comment, "Had one human at the university been armed and had taken out the shooter, 30 lives would be saved." has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever read. The GOP (guns over people) is nothing but the hand maiden of the NRA and both have done everything they could to resist even the most innocuous and commons sense gun reforms. If you chose to worship at the altar of the handgun, that's up to you, but 32 people wouldn't be dead today if the killer had been armed with a baseball bat or a knife. Your idea of posse Americanus is simply ridiculous. The old Wild West never existed and the Marlborough man died of lung cancer.

Yo Electric Bill,

It's a statistically supported fact that states that allow permitted "concealed carry" have a dramatic decrease in both property and personal crimes. This is also predicated that they show they've gone through a weapons safety and marksmanship program before they can apply for the permit and carry a revolver or semi-auto hangun.

As far as this death-dealing wacko is concerned, there must have been signs to his professors and nearby student associates that this guy might have issues. He was a senior and had been on campus for some time. Folks need to be alert to their surroundings; i.e., their "tank" and the denizens that co-habitate with them. Nowadays I advise people to be constantly in a condition of "yellow" alert when you are in public places etc. To walk around like a feel-good dodo might just be the undoing of your life!

You say that using a knife, or blunt edge instrument would not have caused so much mayhem and you are no doubt correct, but what if he decided to put anti-freeze in a cafeteria beverage dispenser and poisoned hundreds of students. Anti-freeze poisoning has a delayed effect resembling intoxication but by the time it's diagnosed as anti-freeze poisoning it's too late. He could have tampered with the school ventilation system and put something ugly in the ducts, then of course there's the "bomb". The point I'm making is that the human imagination is limitless when it comes to coming up with creative ways to do alot people at once. I think you were a bit too rough on Sandy concerning her thesis. She's capable of defending herself, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth on the subject.

Same old arguments about gun control. It's a waste of time. The constitution gives us the right to bear arms and that is that.

BTW, there was an "old wild west." Of course, it wasn't like the movies glamorize it. They didn't face each other in the street and draw fair and square. One hid and shot the other when he wasn't looking. There was a lot of it because it was so easy to get away with. Usually, it was in the middle of nowhere with no one around. As a child I had old relatives who were there during those days. They knew what it was like.

A person who wants to kill will find a way. Guns don't kill people. People kill people.
