Amtrak’s problem-plagued Acela high-speed train sits unused in Washington’s Union Station Tuesday after the railroad grounded the fleet because of dangerous cracks in the wheel assemblies. Once touted as the savior for the financially-strapped railroad passenger system, the Acela frequently breaks down, has the worst on-time record of all Amtrak trains and has left the struggling system even deeper in trouble. Even so, the sleek train remains a favorite of passengers traveling from Washington to New York and Boston.
