How this thing turns out is entirely up to the democrats. They have set up a win or lose situation for both sides. It would be a huge mistake if they backed down from it.

Frankly, I'm surprised they did this. I would be happy they did if I had any faith that they would see it through. Bush will veto, that is a given. He knows this is the make or break point for him. If he backs down his control, his power, is gone and congress will be in charge of the government for the final two years of his presidency. His delusion of himself cannot accept that.

Since they are unable to override a veto by Bush, the question is whether the democrats will have the courage to refuse to alter the bill. They should do that. Now is the time for them to impose the will of the majority of the voters and change the course of history. The impact would go far beyond the Iraq war.

The Bush/Cheney grip on the nation could be broken with this one act if the democrats have the guts to withstand the attack and the intelligence to repudiate all the lies that will come from the republicans. I wonder if they realize what could happen to Bush if they did? He might lose it completely and do something really stupid that would give congress no alternative but to remove him. Or, he might just crawl into a shell of withdrawal and silence for the remainder of his term. Who knows? I sure would like to find out.
