Once they were able to turn the News media into a combination of infotainment and propaganda the handwriting was on the wall . As many of us remember , before the removal of the rules ( Fairness Doctrine ) the news had to be independent and run as a public service to maintain a broadcast license . Now that the rules have been trashed plus the advent of both cable and internet which allows anyone to choose their own reality , confusion and misinformation reins . While that certainly isn't the only issue threatening our democracy , corporate power , campaign finance and a willfully uninformed electorate weigh heavily in our decline also , it was a keystone that fortold of things to come . You simply cannot have a functioning democracy with a misinformed , illinformed population . Our forfathers understood that , but so do our would be corporate masters . Yep , and we’re screwed . As one watches the numbnuts that support Palin , the tea partiers , Beck , Limbaugh , their ilks followers and of course Fox news devotees and on and on . It's truly difficult to see a way out of this dark place we've been led into by a series of corporate sponsored Judas goats . It seems every time one believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel it's yet another oncoming train . I would say the founding fathers words were rife with warnings about just such a situation we now face . From your Madison quote to Franklin's statement about sacrificing freedom for security to Jefferson's warning about banks being more dangerous than standing armys  ,they understood the pitfalls to democracy we have mindlessly blundered into . You can't say we weren't warned but apparently to no avail .
