UPDATE on the Microsoft VISTA issue:

By
April 12, 2009

FYI,

Since so many of you so kindly responded to my previous commentary re: the various issues with VISTA incompatibility and poor Microsoft support, I wanted to update you that Microsoft finally agreed to send me a free copy of its Windows XP Professional software.

However, the catch is that Microsoft will NOT offer free support or warranty coverage on the XP software once I install it.

If I install the new operating system and remove Windows VISTA from my system, Sony will NOT honor its warranty for my computer since the XP was not installed at the factory.

Guess the conclusion to this long saga is that customers just can’t win the way the computer industry is permitted to operate. We constantly are at the mercy of those computer and software mega-companies.

Thanks to all of you for your interest and support in this entire effort.

Well then you might as well put Linux on it like Ubuntu since you’ll get more support for free from them than from any paid software. Just boot from the CD and run a Live CD session to see if it works with your hardware. If it does, then you can do a hard disk installation. You can even partition the drive and keep Vista on there if you want, or I think you can even install into a folder on the Windows partition and run it off NTFS if you want. It is a very good alternative so long as you aren’t a gamer.

My DVR was Vista based and the hard drive just had a major failure. So I’m switching to MythTV on top of Fedora, aka Mythdora because I actually had to steal software from Microsoft to get their Vista Media Center Guide to list all the channels available in my area. They are refusing to release the update to current users, and I’ve had just about enough of their BS. It’s my belief the update will instead be included in Windows 7, forcing Vista Media Center users to upgrade or continue to have a non-functional guide that came with their Vista Home Premium/Ultimate install.

Wasn’t too bad. Took just one night. Pretty easy just make sure you run “# yum update” right after install from a term and all goes well. Helps if your system isn’t bleeding edge. Mine is a 2.8Ghz Intel P4D with 2G RAM, nVidia8600GT, with 2 SATA drives, one 320GB and another 1TB. Recording HD over-the-air up to 1080i via dual Hauppauge 1600′s. Remote and all works. Using MythDora 10.21

I used XP Pro and all the problems I had from Windows ME went bye bye. I haven’t bought a new PC computer because I don’t want Vista, but I did buy a MacBook Pro and have not had any problems other than getting used to the speed and lack of security updates.

Apple doesn’t have the incompatibilities that Microsoft has in PC’s and laptops.
