“WASHINGTON (AP) – Top Bush administration officials are pressing the president to direct U.S. troops in Afghanistan to be more aggressive in pursuing militants into Pakistan on foot as part of a proposed radical shift in regional counterterrorism strategy, The Associated Press has learned.” http://news.aol.com/story/_a/us-weighs-stepped-up-military-forays/n20080808131909990014

Do we not have enough problems in the world? We’ve stuck various sensitive parts of our anatomies into beehives like Iraq and Afghanistan, but even just testing the waters to see if such an emphasis on excursions into Pakistan is acceptable should be viewed as career-limiting. 1. Those people have nuclear weapons. They most likely have them targeted at India, but it would not be outside the realm of possibility for them to do an about-face and use them instead on US bases in eastern Afghanistan. I don’t have anything concrete on which to base this, but my belief is they are hiding and assisting UbL and the rest of his ragtag crew, which would mean they really don’t want us stumbling about their western border too much.

2. In the article it says that some Pentagon and Foggy Bottom officials worry that this might further destabilise the regime there. And with one destabilized nuclear power in the mix there, we certainly should try to avoid another.
