Scene of the crime: A car bomb site in Afghanistan (AFP)

Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama started a campaign-season tour of combat zones and foreign capitals, visiting with U.S. forces in Kuwait and then Afghanistan — the scene of a war he says deserves more attention and more troops

The Illinois senator arrived Saturday in Kabul as part of an official congressional delegation and then flew to eastern Afghanistan. Staff. Sgt. David Hopkins said Obama and two other senators were making a brief stop in Jalalabad airfield, in Nangarhar province, to visit with soldiers stationed there.

Obama's first visit to Afghanistan, coming less than four months before the general election, was rich with political implications. Republican presidential rival John McCain has criticized Obama for his lack of time in the region. Obama is also expected to stop later in Iraq.

Robert Gibbs, a campaign spokesman, said Obama arrived in Kabul around noon. En route from Washington, he made a stopover in Kuwait to meet with U.S. forces stationed there, Gibbs said.

Sultan Ahmad Baheen, spokesman for Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry, confirmed the senator was in Afghanistan and that he would meet with President Hamid Karzai.

"I look forward to seeing what the situation on the ground is," Obama told a pair of reporters who accompanied him to his departure from Andrews Air Force Base on Thursday. "I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense both in Afghanistan and in Baghdad of, you know, what the most, their biggest concerns are, and I want to thank our troops for the heroic work that they've been doing."

Underscoring the challenges in Afghanistan, authorities reported Saturday that a roadside bomb killed four policemen in the volatile south of the country where the Taliban-led insurgency is intensifying nearly seven years after a U.S.-led invasion ousted the militant movement from power.

Obama advocates ending the U.S. combat role in Iraq by withdrawing troops at the rate of one to two combat brigades a month. But he supports increasing the military commitment to Afghanistan, where the Taliban has been resurgent and Osama bin laden is believed to be hiding.

Obama recently chided Karzai and his government, saying it had "not gotten out of the bunker" and helped to organize the country or its political and security institutions.

Also on his itinerary later in the trip is a meeting with Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi leader. On the campaign trail, Obama has said one benefit of withdrawing U.S. troops is that it would pressure al-Maliki to shore up his government as well.

Nonetheless, he said he did not plan to reiterate those messages in person.

"I'm more interested in listening than doing a lot of talking, and I think it's very important to recognize that I'm going over there as a U.S. senator," he said. "We have one president at a time."

The duration and details of Obama's stay in Afghanistan have not been formally disclosed, and media access was limited.

Traveling with Obama were Sens. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican and Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island. The senators, both military veterans, have been mentioned as potential Obama vice presidential running mates, but Reed has said he's not interested in the job.

In a speech this week, Obama said the war in Iraq was a distraction, unlike the fighting in Afghanistan.

"This is a war that we have to win," he said. "I will send at least two additional combat brigades to Afghanistan, and use this commitment to seek greater contributions — with fewer restrictions — from NATO allies.

"I will focus on training Afghan security forces and supporting an Afghan judiciary, with more resources and incentives for American officers who perform these missions."

By contrast, his opposition to the war in Iraq — and call for an end to the U.S. combat role — helped him overcome his rivals in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Lately, his efforts to explain how he will use what he learns from U.S. commanders to refine his proposals have brought charges from Republicans and complaints from Democratic liberals that he seems to be shifting his Iraq policy toward the political center. But Obama maintains his basic goal of ending the U.S. combat role soon remains unchanged and that he's always said the U.S. withdrawal must be done carefully.

Obama also arranged to visit Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and England, traveling aboard a jet chartered by his presidential campaign, before his return to the United States. The weeklong trip marks his only foreign excursion as a presidential candidate; McCain has visited Canada, Colombia and Mexico, in part to highlight Obama's opposition to trade deals with those allies.

Few citizens in impoverished Afghanistan were aware of Obama's unannounced visit, and few have been following the U.S. presidential race, being too busy eking out an existence amid soaring violence and with limited access to news media.

But some interviewed Saturday said they would welcome an Obama presidency if he could help their country end the fighting, corruption and poverty that have crippled it for so long.

"Obama is a good person," said Abdul Basir, 40, a former army officer. "During his campaign I heard he was saying that if I become president I will withdraw the U.S. troops from Iraq and bring them to Afghanistan and I will attack on the terror center on other side of border (in Pakistan). It is very important and I appreciated that."

Thank god there's only one

Thank god there's only one of you, Bryan. I have no idea what your point is, other than a vague criticism of Obama. I assume it's because he's going to Afghanistan to get a firsthand look at the situation there. What would you have him do? Stay in the U.S. and make proposals about what to do there without having a realistic idea of what the situation requires? If he stayed home, would you then criticize him for not knowing what he was talking about?

What do you want?

Maybe I'm being silly but

Maybe I'm being silly but there seems to be a dearth of WE in either of the candidates platforms.

McMonotonous and Presto ChangeObama flatter themselves, but alas that is the politicians bent.

Until they realize there is no (I) without the American people, we will continue to be treated as road kill.

We've heard neither ask for our advice or opinion which believe it or not, we can be sure other nations are interested in.

Politicians think and act like Svengali, all on the basis of biased polls and the next media fabricated dust up.

How do we know either truly speaks for us and not the garnered interests of a few wealthy donors? Will there be full disclosure of Obamas meetings? In a single word, no!

We know full well that security will be so tight a fart couldn't slip out. That anyone thinks Obama will get the real facts is a pipe dream and we can thank our current dictator and his paid for media thats setting him up for the fall.

The neocon pack dogs are at this moment frothing at the mouth for fresh meat and wonder boy has gleefully exposed his ass thinking he can't be bitten.

Junkets are for pandering and photo ops. We need solutions here before we run off half cocked to the other side of the world spouting what I'M going to do.

And yes, I'm glad there is but one of me also. If I we're forced to live the politicians life of duality my tiny ledge would disappear like the wisp of smoke that our nation is rapidly becoming.

What this country really

What this country really needs is to quit being a republic and join the rest of the 1st world countries and become a Democracy. The same kind of govt that they have in England. Where the country's leader goes before the elected represenatives and answers questions. That is the kind of govt that we need. As we have discovered over the past 8 years, a republic can be hi-jacked by the president, and we can have a congress that lets him do it. This would never have happened in a parlimentary form of democracy, the people would have demanded a vote of no confidence, and the govt would have fallen. No, a republic form of govt was fine back in the horse and buggy days, given the vast country. But now, in an internet 2.0 world? With 24/7 news? with instant communication? No, we need a new type of democracy, one that responds to an informed electorate......ooops, maybe that lets us out, because of our 50% sheeple nation, who have raised ignorance to an art form. I mean, we elected gwb didn't we? Well once anyway, 2000 election doesn't count seeing as how the SCOTUS made that decision. So, I guess that we continue to play in our sandbox of ignorance, and continue to elect people not based on their intelligence, but on whether or not the sheeple would like to sit and have a beer with him(not her of course, after all a womans place is in the kitchen, preferably barefoot and preggers). That is how one of the wealthy elite who earned a "gentlemans C" throughout university, and who got into grad school on a legacy, who failed in every business he started-but was bailed out by daddys rich friends, who fronted a group that bought a baseball team(with very little money of his own) but who collected millions when the group sold out-once more, daddys friends taking care of junior-who decided that, because he was unsuited to every other job, decided to run for president-and once more, daddys friends paved the way. That is the kind of a leader that the sheeple want, along with a congress filled with sycophants, who allow and help in the looting of the treasury. Meanwhile a former dem, who lost his primary, then ran-and won-as an independent, becomes a repig-but according to laws running a republic, can't be kicked out for not representing those who voted for a liberal dem. The sheeple continue to graze while gwb fiddles and the US burns. But that is what the sheeple want, a govt that is more suited to the 18th century than the 21st, a govt, that once elected, they don't have to think about until the next election-well maybe they don't have to think, period. So we continue, a congress full of corruption and crooks, an incompetent president, wars started so that the military-industrial complex can cash in, borrowing trillions in order to paper over a wrong headed tax cut and to finance 2 wars(that the sheeple don't want to hear or think about either) Just like ground hog day, we do the same things over and over yet expect that this time the outcome will be different. The GOP is full of the corrupt and incompetent, several in jail as they were dumb enough to get caught, others in the GOP are closet homosexuals, who rant loud and long in public against what they do in private. Hypocrite is not a big enough word for them. And the sheeple(50% of voters) graze peacefully, content with a govt of crooks and liars

Maybe ,if anything, we will

Maybe ,if anything, we will get some truthful pictures and reports from this Obama trip..lord knows Mcbush came back full of lies about the safety of the country of Iraq. No matter what Obama does, Mcbush will be critical of him, because that airhead has NOTHING to say, but find fault with whatever Obama does. Makes me wonder who is advising tbe little man about things. I feel that Obama will be a lot wiser about what is happening over there when he sees for himself the real situation. Thank heavens he has the intelligence to make the trip and decide the best route to get us OUT OF THERE. I do wish that Mcbush would remember the old adage that he who lives in a glass house should never throw stones. He has so much wrong with him and his life, he is walking on eggshells to try and be funny about anyone else. His gaffs would fill a good sized book, if anyone wanted to read about them. And the reason that the big news media went along,Mr. Mcbush was because they were ASKED TO. Ever heard of that idea? If they had been with you, your lies would have been a lot harder to pass on to the nation, you poor deluded little man.

Those of us who remember the

Those of us who remember the media coverage of the Vietnam War will remember the daily body counts, as though the tallying of the dead, which included peasant men, women, and children who happened to get in the way, was indicative of a level of success there.

I'm noticing a disturbing trend towards the body count mentality, particularly in Afhanistan. When the body count becomes more important than geographic hegemony you can be assured we are well on our way to losing.

Good Grief! How can anyone

Good Grief! How can anyone believe that visiting a foreign country for 2 days or even 2 weeks can tell you what is happening in that country any better than reading the news on the internet. I would point out the obvious, that our politicians who go over there talk with their politicians, so where in any conversations between such people will anyone find a grain of truth or a factual appraisal of what is occurring socially, politically, or ACTUALLY? It all comes down to who is the bigger and better liar and who is the most gullible.

I believe these "Fact-Finding" junkets or trips should be paid for by the politician who wants to take the trip, not by We the People or Us the Taxpayers. I know we would see a remarkable drop in the number of trips taken by our Representatives and our Senators, and I don't believe that they would know any more than they did before they went cavorting around the world on our bank account . Let them stay home and legislate--that's what we are paying them to do. If absolutely necessary, give them subscriptions to 3 or 4 of our best newspapers. It would certainly cost a hell of a lot less than one of their trips.

I am so tired of these exploiters of the laws that they themselves pass. Maybe we need a third body to write the laws and leave the finessing to the Congress. Maybe we need less of an imperial presidency, less of an imperial senate, and a lot more representation from our Representatives. Maybe if they were allowed to serve for ONLY ONE three year term we could find some honest men and women to occupy the offices that these lifetime thieves now are infesting. Give them all a dose of DDT and send them packing.
