If you haven't seen the cover of July 21st issue of The New Yorker, you're lucky. It's the most gross, sick and pathetic attempt at satire I've ever seen in my life.

I can't describe it to you because that would only add to the disgrace. Fox will show this more often than they did the Wright byte, and call it "humor."

As a (former) subscriber of that publication all my adult life, I will miss the way it used to be.

Not Lenny Bruce nor George Carlin nor even rap lyrics made me think that Freedom of the Press could go too far.
This cover does.

Shame on The New Yorker for stooping so low to increase their circulation, which must be in the toilet, where it belongs.

I actually agree with the

I actually agree with the satirist. It is the picture that McCain's camp is trying to paint. Probably should have put the title of the artwork on the cover too, but they want to sell magazines and this is definitely getting the attention they wanted.

Art should imitate life, and this is funny when taken in the proper context, because of it's absurdity. Being upset about it only proves how worried we are people aren't smart enough to tell the difference between the reality and the propaganda. It's a sad commentary on the state of politics in America.

"We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it's tasteless and offensive," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Yes Tucker, it's tasteless when a liberal points out the smear campaign but it's just politics when it's an anonymous email sent millions of times or someone on Fox News' "Hannity and Colmes" spreading the Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) about the Obama campaign.

This is such a low blow that

This is such a low blow that it is not worth any time at all, but obviousy Main Stream Media is getting desperate at the thought of losing all their tax breaks in 2009 and they will fill up our air waves with this stinking stuff.

Again, it's all a distraction to breed fear and hate. Don't we have enough of that?

I demand equal time. If you are going to satirize Obama, satirize McCain.

Otherwise I think perhaps some sort of crusade AGAINST the advertisers of the New Yorker, might just be in order.

»

LOL! I totally agree about

LOL! I totally agree about the equal time. They should do a cover of McCain riding on a wheelchair that looks like a tank, star of David painted on the side, and make him look even older and extremely wrinkly.

Or have him taking a sledge hammer to a computer, only he can't lift the hammer because he's too old and it's too heavy and he's calling for his wife to help him. Have some Viagra thrown in there, maybe a picture of George W. Bush on his desk signed "hugs and kisses" or something and a signing statement that says "100 years war" on the title.

Perhaps I missed my calling? Too bad I can't draw. :)

The spin is in. First the

The spin is in. First the L.A. Times is telling me (the only person I can speak for) that this is "satire." Well, dearies, I've ghostwritten satire since SNL began, and this ain't it.

CNN is also blathering on about the satirical aspects of this cover. Yeah, right. What, Rupert Murdoch is now one of your writers?

Woody188's comments made me laugh aloud -- and that's something. Thanks. Funny thing is that if formerly great The New Yorker had done that, it would've been amusing because those things are light and McCain has joked about them himself.

But what they did to Obama by suggesting the evil rumors still lurking under ill-informed rugs are based on fact, have given new dimensions to the meaning of "not in touch." The Algonquin Round Table has turned square.

Happy to have brightened

Happy to have brightened your day. :) We all could use a little humor in these times.

Follow the money and chain of ownership, and you probably won't be surprised by these types of things or which media outfits publish them. Here is a good page if you are interested.

They're not suggesting that

They're not suggesting that rumors lurking under rugs are anything. In fact, they're actually poking the rumormongers straight in the eye by bringing the mental images to life so that everyone can see how ridiculous they actually are in the light of day.

The object of satire isn't Obama. It's the mental image of Obama as cooked up by the slimeballs who fear him, the Koran-swearing Muslim radical President who will immediately turn all the public schools into Halal serving madrassas, mount a portrait of Osama bin Laden in every government agency, the leftist apparatchik who will summon
convoys of Iranian car bombers down Connecticut Avenue to follow his motorcade on Inauguration Day.

Yes but the sheep don't know

Yes but the sheep don't know that. To them it is nothing but subliminal programming!

Wasn't that one of the tools used in Orwell's 1984? The brainwashing of America. Had sad.

But's all over Main Stream

But's all over Main Stream media!

The sheep watch MSM and believe it as truth!

Of all the stuff that happened last week, and there were a lot of bills and issues actually going on other than FISA, what are the sheep hearing. That Obama is embarrassed by Americans because they don't speak spanish or french.

So when I did some research because I don't listen to known right wing disinformationalist's propaganda.....I found that mostly it was covered ONLY by such people except for the Washington Post that give it a small mention in their political "On the trail" blog.

People don't know or really care that corps like Clear Channel Communications and other neo-con corps are gobbling up the communications networks one piece at a time thanks to enablers like GW & McBush.

Once they have total control of the communications here or all over the world, then there will be nothing left of truth anywhere. Just what they want you to hear, just what they want you to know!

The cover timing does feels

The cover timing does feels like a distraction. What with the IndyMac bank run Friday, and National City today, and the bail-out of Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae. We are in the midst of a financial implosion, but all any of the corporate news people are talking about is the stupid cover of the New Yorker.

Let's not fail to mention the stream of Israeli politician's visiting Washington this week, reportedly trying to goad us into attacking Iran before Bush's time runs out.

Classic distraction via inflammatory media they knew would draw attention. I would expect nothing less from a Newhouse owned publication. Never mind the man behind the curtain. Nothing to see here. Move along.

I expect to see a number of these types of things until we either attack Iran or the financial system finally goes POP!

Yep people are so busy

Yep people are so busy accusing or defending that piece of trash that they are entirely oblivious or just don't care that GW has once again circumvented the law and done what he damn well pleases despite the law without any consequences regarding the ban on offshore drilling.

He said the Dems weren't giving him what he needed fast enough.

That's what is really obscene... but we are busy distracted with something that is such a classic example of propaganda that it would make the best of them proud.

The insinuation that the

The insinuation that the media is somehow controlled by the "vast right-wing conspiracy" or the neocons is untrue partisan crap. The media serves government in all aspects and merely encourages this perception to keep us occupied with meaningless drivel.

The Telecommunications Reform Act of 1996 was the instrument that enabled the corporatization and consolidation of the media, under the guise of "deregulation". The act was passed by the Republican Congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton. A bi-partisan effort.

This is standard M.O. The government burdens an industry with excessive regulation which leads to higher prices, poor service, and lack of competition.

Then the People insist the government step in and deregulate said industry so their corporate buddies, the underwriters of our government, can scarf up the struggling small companies, all the while promising lower prices and better services that only a mega-corporation can supply.

They blame the "free market", which ceased to be free as soon as the government stepped in. So they kill two birds with one stone. They "prove" that a free market can't supply the public with quality goods and services, and they pave the way for their corporate overlords to gain control of the industry.

So what we have in this country can better be termed as Monopoly Capitalism.

As far as I'm concerned, this cover is nothing different than you may see in any political cartoon on any given day in any newspaper. We really have much bigger worries. This is modern politics.

Why is everyone so outraged? We asked for it.

»

The "sheep" don't have to

The "sheep" don't have to read it -- they don't even have to be able to read.

The cover speaks.

More spin coming fast is that the cartoon has a title: "The Politics of Fear." We're supposed to guess this?

»

If the New Yorker is news

If the New Yorker is news than this cover has no place in a legitimate news media.

If the New Yorker is entertainment, propaganda or something other than NEWS then it shoud advertise itself as such.

The sheep will think that another newspaper has confirmed all the hoaxes that have been proven untrue.

That fact goes entirely ignored though. So once again in the name of truth here are the links to the

Truth about Obama
Obama Hoaxes...True or False?

Truth about McCain
McCain Hoaxes...True or False?

Interesting that McCain has only 18 circulated hoaxes and Obama has 39 circulated hoaxes. That is more than 2 published lies about Obama for every 1 published lie for McCain.

Queen D While knowing that I

Queen D
While knowing that I state the obvious, the latest Obamatoon perpetrated by the New Yorker is just part of a series of “satires” and commentaries to be expected in an election year and capitalized on by those who are dealing with their own subliminal equivocation. These deluded entities are intentionally or unintentionally encouraging the idea that Obama is a Muslim sympathizer, (HEAVEN FORBID) if not a Muslim himself and that his wife is a tough, militant, non-patriotic uppity negro whose rise on the tails of her husband will lead to a lowering of the “class” associated with the nation’s highest office. I say intentionally or unintentionally because the impulses that compel these exercises in poor taste are often not even clear to the perpetuators.

These are two highly educated, family oriented people who have not grown up with silver spoons in their mouths and an inability to relate to a cross section of people from a global and economic perspective. If ANYTHING, Obama’s non-American name, his skin color and his gracious and knowledgeable wife of color would beyond a doubt pan out to be enormous assets in proving that America is ready to join the rest of the world on an even footing, fellow dancers gliding across a world stage that is evolving racially, socially and economically.

For those who lack the intellectual rigor to understand the mostly positive and refreshing change this will make in the United States and abroad, I feel sorry for their lack of vision. Obama may not be perfect, but he sure beats another Republican in office.

I'm no artist (and it

I'm no artist (and it wouldn't work here anyway), but I wonder why the New Yorker doesn't have some of the following "satirical" covers:

- Cheney blowing off someone's head with a shotgun
and saying "oops"

- A time-bomb ticking in McCain's swollen cheek

- A typhoon wiping out a 3rd world country,
titled "Nature's own environmental cleanup tool"

I imagine I could propose some even cruder ideas, but then I'd be doing the New Yorker's work for them.

I guess they don't know the difference between humor, satire, political criticism, bad taste, and libel - it's all the same to them.

As Gomer would say: "Shame, shame, shame"
