![]() Sen. Barack Obama (AP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Wednesday sought to quell concerns over anti-American remarks by his former pastor, saying people are paying too much attention to a small number of "stupid" comments. Obama gave a sweeping speech on race last week in which he condemned incendiary remarks by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but the words of the former pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago continue to dog the candidate. Reflecting the campaign's concern about the fallout, Obama used a question about religion at a town hall forum as an opportunity to address the issue. "This is somebody that was preaching three sermons at least a week for 30 years and it got boiled down ... into a half-minute sound clip and just played it over and over and over again, partly because it spoke to some of the racial divisions we have in this country," Obama told an audience in this central North Carolina city. "There are misunderstandings on both sides," the Illinois senator said. "We cannot solve the problems of America if every time somebody somewhere does something stupid, that everybody gets up in arms and forgets about the war in Iraq and we forget about the economy." On Tuesday, Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, weighed in directly, saying: "I think that given all we have heard and seen, he would not have been my pastor." The controversy began earlier this month when videos of Wright's sermons surfaced, including one in which the pastor shouts "God damn America" for its treatment of minorities. Wright has said the U.S. government invented AIDS to destroy "people of color" and also has suggested that U.S. policies in the Middle East and elsewhere were partly responsible for the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon. In the speech last week, Obama sharply condemned Wright's remarks and the preacher's refusal to acknowledge progress in race relations. But he refused to repudiate his longtime spiritual mentor, saying he could no more disown Wright than he could disown his white grandmother. Wright has canceled some planned public appearances this week. Obama said Wednesday he has spoken with the pastor. "I have talked to him. I have not asked him to do anything," the Illinois senator told reporters. Copyright © 2008 The Associated Press

It's not Obama's pastor that
Submitted by Stratocaster on March 27, 2008 - 7:31am.It's not Obama's pastor that bothers me, it is Obama himself. In defending his pastor, and making his typically white comment, he has exposed himself as a person that thinks blacks can't do anything wrong and whites can't do anything right. This makes him a racist and black supremist, and there is no way in hell, I would want him for a president. This leaves me with no one to vote for, but I should be used to that by now. All politicians are typically scum, and in a campaign, the scum rises to the top.
At last something has
Submitted by rickh1954 on March 27, 2008 - 9:19am.At last something has surfaced that can put a good face on our underlying desire not to vote for a black man.
The accusation of being a closet Muslim was a bit tenuous and besides, a little racist in itself.
The crime of smoking while being black, a little too transparent and silly.
But this, his awkwardly worded attempt to acknowledge a very common reaction of white people when they encounter an unknown black male, ahhhhhhhhh finally we have a conscience salving excuse to turn our back on another black candidate. How satisfying. The search can end, we have a principled excuse to do the wrong thing.
I never see color. I treat
Submitted by Stratocaster on March 27, 2008 - 2:45pm.I never see color. I treat all people as individuals. But, accuse me of being prejudice, and your going to end up kissing my white butt. I've been in a lot of situations where I was the only white man present. The white race is the minority race of the world. I never owned any slaves and have never harmed anouther person other than in self defense. So, don't blame your damn black troubles on me, I had nothing to do with them, and I have enough problems of my own. Besides, if it wasn't for slavery all of these dudes would still be in Africa. They got free transportation to America and never got charged for the trip. If they don't like this country, there are boats and planes leaving every day.
One night my car stalled and I had to walk. I ran into six really large black dudes. They ran like hell. They were afraid of me. But, yet, it is the typical white people that are prejudice. Bull crap. Grow up, and quite blamiong all of your problems on white people. like I do.

Stratocaster: Your level of
Submitted by Sheep on March 27, 2008 - 6:10pm.Stratocaster: Your level of ignorance frightens me! Why don't you be honest. You are trapped in your own ignorance and you are afraid to exceed the sum of what you have been taught all of your life.
I truly feel sorry for you and your kind.

When I say I don't see
Submitted by Stratocaster on March 27, 2008 - 8:55pm.When I say I don't see color, I mean I don't judge people buy their color. I have worked for years in situations where I was the only white person. I have black people for friends. There are black people I trust my back with, but none of them whine and blame all of their problems on this poor white dude. I find some of Obama's words objectionable. So what? He is not Jesus returned to the earth.

I agree with Hillary on this
Submitted by JudyB on March 28, 2008 - 6:54pm.I agree with Hillary on this one.."I think that given all we have heard and seen, he would not have been my pastor."
I also understand where Obama is coming from, saying he does not agree with wright but is not willing to disavow him as his friend and pastor. IF Obama were to renounce Wright he would have many blacks saying he renounced his race. Obama is between a rock and a hard place, and dealing with the issue of Wright, being wrong, will not be easy. Its much the same as Hillary, blamed for what her husband says, has said, does and has done. She chose to stay with him and people have not, nor will they, get over it...I doubt if Obama will escape it either. I was not too surprised to hear Wright's "God damn America" sermon, because he and a FEW (not many) other black ministers have preached prejudice for years.
When Michelle Obama said in a talk, "for the first time in my life, I'm proud to be an American" Since I already knew about the Church she was attending, with Rev. Wright as its pastor and preacher, she has heard more than a few blatently biased sermons over the years, so, I was not as surprised to hear her say it as I was shocked.
I do not think Obama is a racist any more than Hillary is. We all have friends and relatives who we totally disagree with yet love regardless, but since we are not all running for president, we do not have to face the non-stop scrutiny they have to endure at every turn..
One would have too be deaf, blind and dumb to think that racism does not exist in all races, but, we do not have to be a part of the bigoted ignorance, that racism is.

Pillary Dillary Crock is now
Submitted by Klaus Hergeschimmer on March 30, 2008 - 5:16pm.Pillary Dillary Crock is now a Nader and a spoiler for the Democrats, this pastor thing is such non-news.
Hillary's ego is in overdrive. She couldn't care less that she's making things rosier for McCain by prolonging her futile race with Obama when she just dosen't have enough superdelegates. Patrick Leahy has begged Hillary to stop flailing her little ego around and concede to Obama!
I couldn't care less if Hillary or Obama wins, they are both
enabling the Neo-Cons in their bid to stay in Iraq for years to come. It is just pitiful that this pastor flap still has traction but Pillary and Obama are stuck talking about this silly krap that is so incidental to the real problems looming up on our country with Iraq.
Pillary and Obama are both saying they won't even consider getting out of Iraq for years to come, both of them are cheese Whizzes, especially Hillary taking money from Arch Conservative Rupert Murdoch, Defense Industry, Pharmaceutical and Health Care Industry.
She's A Scumbag and a harlot taking money from Rupert Murdoch.
What folks think is going to change if Billary gets in is beyond me. She's already a call girl for Rupert Murdoch and the Merchants of war who are not giving Billary money because she's going to bake them a cake.
Sir Obama of Camelot and Pillary Dilary Crock are not promising anything except more neo-con enabling in Iraq.
NO MORE HILLARY, NO MORE CLINTONS, WHETHER THEY'RE WEARING A
DRESS OR NOT (OR BOTH :D)
Obama seems to be a typical
Submitted by Paolo on March 29, 2008 - 9:28pm.Obama seems to be a typical socialist, enamored with government solutions to the problems government itself creates. But I personally don't give a hoot what his pastor says, just as I don't give a hoot about what the Pope says when a Catholic runs for office, or what the Mormon Church preaches when Mitt Romney runs, or what Pastor Hagee, Pat Robertson, or Jerry Falwell think when George Bush and John McCain run for office. If they disavow the more execrable creeds of those denominations, that's good enough for me.
