While publicly claiming she disagrees with racist statements by former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, Democratic contender Hillary Clinton refuses to remove Ferraro from her fundraising role with the campaign, sticking with a race card strategy that shows how increasingly bitter her "win at any cost" strategy has become.

Clinton's refusal to fire Ferraro for claiming frontrunner Barack Obama is only in his position because he is black has brought anger from the African-American community that once embraced the Clintons and invoked the ire of liberal activists and bloggers around the country.

At MSNBC, news show host Keith Olbermann told listeners Tuesday that he will have one of his hard-hitting, biting commentaries on Clinton's campaign tactics on Wednesday's broadcast.

Olbermann called Clinton's actions "unacceptable" and "unbelievable." Newsweek writer Howard Finneman, appearing on Olbermann's show, said Clinton has clearly "broadened her kitchen sink" attack strategy to play the race card and has escalated the level of nastiness in an already dirty campaign.

"Okay, I'm convinced. Geraldine Ferraro is a bona fide racist," writes Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, publisher of The Daily Kos, quoting from a 1988 Washington Post article that notes:

Former representative Geraldine A. Ferraro (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that because of his 'radical' views, "if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race."

"So forget about chalking this up to dementia," Zuniga concludes.

Still, Clinton refuses to fire Ferraro.

Reports Peter Jackson of The Associated Press:

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday she disagrees with Geraldine Ferraro, one of her fundraisers and the 1984 Democratic vice presidential candidate, for saying that Barack Obama "would not be in this position" if he were white instead of black.

In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Clinton said she regretted Ferraro's remarks. The Obama campaign has called on the New York senator to denounce the comments and remove Ferraro from her unpaid position with the campaign.

Last week, Ferraro told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif.: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

She also faulted a "very sexist media" in the historic race between a man bidding to be the first black president and a former first lady seeking to become the first female president.

In the AP interview, Clinton said, "I do not agree with that," and later added, "It's regrettable that any of our supporters — on both sides, because we both have this experience — say things that kind of veer off into the personal."

"We ought to keep this on the issues. There are differences between us" on approaches to issues such as health care and energy.

Ferraro is a former New York congresswoman and was Walter Mondale's running mate when he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1984. She has endorsed Clinton and raised money for her campaign.

Obama called Ferraro's comments "patently absurd."

"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd," he told the Allentown Morning Call.

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said Ferraro should be removed from her position with the Clinton campaign because of her comments.

"The bottom line is this, when you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said in a conference call with reporters.

A defiant Ferraro dismissed the criticism in an interview with Fox News.

"I have to tell you that what I find is offensive is that everytime somebody says something about the campaign, you're accused of being racist."

She also said she was the vice presidential nominee 24 years ago because of her sex, saying if her name was "Gerard Ferraro" she wouldn't have been on the ballot.

Adds the French news agency AFP:

Ferraro, who sits on Clinton's finance committee and has spoken at her rallies, sparked the firestorm when she was quoted by a California newspaper as saying: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position."

Obama, the first African-American with a viable shot at the White House, called the remark by the Democrats' 1984 vice presidential nominee "patently absurd."

"I don't think that Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or the Democratic Party," he told Pennsylvania newspaper The Morning Call.

His campaign clamored for Ferraro's head, noting the swift resignation of an Obama aide last week after her remark that Clinton was a "monster" sparked howls of outrage from the New York senator's team.

Obama's top strategist David Axelrod said the comments were part of an "insidious pattern that needs to be addressed," bringing up previous racially tinged rows between the two camps.

But Clinton said only that she did "not agree" with Ferraro's portrayal of Obama as the privileged recipient of affirmative action, and found it "regrettable" that supporters might resort to personal attacks.

"We ought to keep this focused on the issues. That's what this campaign should be about," she said while stumping in Pennsylvania ahead of the state's crunch primary on April 22.

Ferraro was the first woman on a major presidential ticket when she ran with Democratic nominee Walter Mondale in 1984. Republican Ronald Reagan won reelection in a landslide.

Speaking on Fox News, she refused to apologize, accused the Obama campaign of waging a hate campaign against her, and reiterated that the candidate's political success was "in large measure because he is black."

"I said this (Obama's) is one of the best campaigns. I speak about his star quality. I talk about how exciting it is to have two campaigns, but you know, the truth is the truth is the truth," Ferraro added.

This is a prime example...

This is a prime example...
of how actions speak louder than words. Clinton obviously thinks Ferraro's commentary is not only acceptable, but beneficial, as shown by her allowing her to stick around on her campaign. Ferraro and hillary are a shame to the democratic party, as are about 50% of the other republicrats.

Oh, and let me add, our dear hillary, the one who sent us to this war based on lies and who will not get us out of the war as she deceptively claims (She has shown what kind of judgement she possesses), has only gotten as far as she has because she is a woman. If she was a man, she couldn’t be an ex-spouse of a president, as we don’t allow gay marriage in this ‘free’ country. And I don’t think we can deny that she is where she is because of Bill, at least she has certainly used him to propel her to where she is. She wouldn’t be able to claim her 8 years as first lady as political experience as she does and wouldn’t have the clout of an ex-president pushing for her election (or one might say his re-election) as passionately as he does if she wasn’t a woman. Bill and her have already spent eight years in the white house, but because we have not closed the loophole, they, without a little pride, are taking advantage. I’d love to see a woman in the White House but not one who already spent two terms there, not one that is mean-spirited, not one who lies and exaggerates, and not one who has proven she would have very poor judgement as commander-in-chief.

If the democrats don’t send them packing, the rest of the country will in the general election, as the repugnicans will be out in full force against her, and a lot of people see through her and know she is not much different than mccain. Many of us will just go third party before we vote for more war in the middle east. Perhaps how this will all play out is she’ll pull some sleazy trick with the Florida and Michigan, win the primary, then lose the general election due to the repugnicans out in full force and the formation of a strong, liberal party. That would be a good thing, as we liberals have very little representation in this ‘two-party’ one party system.

Ferraro’s comments are not only very bigoted and inaccurate, but hypocrital, as it is quite apparent that hillary has used her position as a woman to take advantage of a loophole in our term limits law. Truly disgusting. Good day!

Superb commentary

Superb commentary Pablo...!

For those few that have followed up on this string expressing their continuing support for Hillary Clinton, regardless of her antics; all I can say is you've done little serious research concerning she and Bill's seedy political past and record.

You'll learn the most by researching their days when Bill was governor of Arkanasas; ie., their personal fiefdom, along with ongoing RICO based shenanigans via the Arkansas Develeopment Commission, complicity with the CIA to operate a base in Mena (illegal per their charter) , and to support H.W. Bush, then V.P., also Mr. CIA's Iran/Contra scam.

These two will do anything to further their careers, line their pockets and surely have the evil gravitas to sellout the U.S. to any interest for just a few bucks, euros, rupees, or yuan more...!

People need to get it in their evidently thick heads that Hillary Clinton is a political "shapeshifter" and will embrace any plan or idea as long as it furthers she and Bill's bottom line while satisifying both the needs and demands of their NWO/MIC/AIPAC controllers...!

The irony is that Gerry was

The irony is that Gerry was an actual Affirmative Action candidate in 1984 and her committee assignments were also part of that program, presided over by Tip himself. Those were indeed different times.

There is much I like about Hillary Clinton but I've about had it with the baiting, sleaze, Irish peace and 3 A.M. and attempts to change the rules in the middle of the sixth inning that has come to c0onstitute her campaign.

Not firing Ferraro is the same as not admitting that the 2002 Iraq vote was a mistake.

Aaargh! Just another

Aaargh! Just another example of the depths the clinton campaign will stoop to trying to win the nomination. Rest assured if the Obama campaign had said anything so reprehensible, the clintons would have been hollering from the rooftops and crying foul. I hope the remaining voters will take a long, hard look and then vote to knock her out of the race. It's for sure she won't bow out gracefully! This country does not need hillary and her ilk in our government -- they are mean-spirited, will try to win at all costs, and are in the process of tearing our party apart. She must be shown the door.

The more I get to know

The more I get to know Obama, the more I like him. The more I get to know Hillary, the less I like her.

Obama has shown unwaveringly that he has conducted his campaign with ethics and class. Hillary has shown that she is so obsessed with power and obtaining her "rightful" position as president that she will do anything, right or wrong, even if it means dividing the party and losing the election for the Democrats to McCain.

Hillary should have dismissed Ferrara for making such inappropriate and absurd comments about Obama. The fact is, whatever his race (and he's half white don't forget), he is brilliant, inspirational and our best chance to change the paradigm of Washington politics.

I was hoping for the dream ticket. Now, I'm not so sure Hillary should be on it.

I may be crazy, but I don't

I may be crazy, but I don't think Geraldine Ferraro should go back on her words. This is another case of the Emperor's Clothes. What she said is true - if Obama were white & at the same point in life & experience, he would not be as acceptable as a candidate. Although he is running a fabulous campaign, I liken it to MTV promotion, all style & no substance.
I remember when Ferraro was running what she had to put up with, including Barbara Bush referring to her as a name rhyming with witch. She talks from experience.
Let's get over it - every criticism against Obama is labeled racist, & I don't think this is the case.

Anyone thinking that Clinton

Anyone thinking that Clinton will bow out gracefully is very naive. She will tear the party in two..wreck the country and do anything she can make up in her pea brain mind ..to WIN at any cost. When I talk with otherwise intelligent people and they are all for her canadacy.. I am stopped in my tracks. Obama is the hope of this country to start a new direction for us all...clinton is more of the same.. she is so entrenched in the DC as usual politics she could not find her way out with a flashlight. McCain is the same cut of cloth.. He is surrounded by lobbists who will want SOMETHING from him and don't you forget it. Two of them worked to sell the contract for the refuel tankers to a company outside of the United States and I hope THAT is one contract that can be STOPPED. Those blood sucking creatures never do anything for nothing Aren't we all tired of hypocrites...liars and thieves in government? Got rid of an arrogant class A liar today (Spitzer ) now if we could rid ourselves of some more maybe we could get the country back.

In our home, we have until

In our home, we have until recently watched Keith Olbermann and enjoyed his commentaries; however, lately, he has shown himself to be another over-inflated sports commentator turned political commentator who has a healthy tendency toward being a blatant misogynist. He is absolutely incapable of reporting fairly about Clinton. He is so enamored by Obama, or the idea of Obama -- it is just repulsive to watch. I thought at one time that Chris Matthew was the sexist, misogynist -- now I consider them two peas in a pod.

Hillary said that she disagrees with the statement that Ferraro made.

But, I wonder what all the reaction is really about -- to me it seems staged, fake, and way over the top. If you honestly look at where Obama is -- in the lead in delegates, winner of at least four southern states. He has won these four southern states and their delegates because of high African American votes. In Mississippi, over 90% of the Black voters voted for Obama -- not a "normal" breakdown in voters, at all -- and in exit polls, those Black voters admitted that race was the most important factor in their voting for Obama. So, Obama won that state and its delegates, as he did with other southern states with high Black voter counts. So, if Black voters are voting for Obama because his race is the most important factor (because he is Black), isn't he in his present position of leading in delegate count because he is Black?

I have many Black friends and without an exception, each one of has been encouraged and pressured by friends, church, etc... to vote for Obama because he is Black. African-Americans seem to see this as their best chance ever of gaining the most important political office in the USA, and they are voting for him because he is Black.

Too bad women don't vote in such a single-minded SEXIST manner. If so, Hillary would be OVER THE TOP and on the ticket right now!

I think she just destroyed

I think she just destroyed her chances of a vice presidential position in the Obama white house.
