Ap reports the following today:

Sewage-based fertilizer safety doubted

"It was a farm idea with a big payoff and supposedly no downside: ridding lakes and rivers of raw sewage and industrial pollution by converting it all into a free, nutrient-rich fertilizer. Then last week, a federal judge ordered the Agriculture Department to compensate a farmer whose land was poisoned by sludge from the waste treatment plant here. His cows had died by the hundreds.

The Associated Press also has learned that some of the same contaminants showed up in milk that regulators allowed a neighboring dairy farmer to market, even after some officials said they were warned about it.

In one case, according to test results provided to the AP, the level of thallium — an element once used as rat poison — found in the milk was 120 times the concentration allowed in drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The contaminated milk and the recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Anthony Alaimo raise new doubts about a 30-year government policy that encourages farmers to spread millions of tons of sewage sludge over thousands of acres each year as an alternative to commercial fertilizers.

The program is still in effect.

This is ONE OF THE REASONS why I buy organic milk. However, I am still not certain that even the so-called organic foods could not be effected by this. I'm making an assumption that someone who is labeling their product "organic" would not use such a product. But that is an assumption, so it is probably WRONG!

No wonder so many people have cancer. Our MASSIVE BUREAUCRACY can't protect us. They can't keep up safe! In fact they may be directly responsible for the programs that are killing us!

Hi pollchecker...

First I must compliment you on the never-ending, quality blog commentary that you provide for CHB readers. :)

The use of human waste fertilizer is quite common in the Orient along with it's known hazards.

For many years there's been a superlative product marketed in the U.S. known "Milorganite" which is processed human waste. Of course it's processed at high temperatures to kill of any known bacterial and viral components, but there's still the problem residual heavy and exotic metals contamination.

It will surely green up a lawn after a cold, hard winter suffering from snow mold and general lack of nutrition, but it's the cadmium and other metals added to the soil that are in question.

For many years, Americans have used this botanically energizing product, but what else lurks in the "bag"...?!

"Milorganite" is no doubt a medium to mild contributor to this aforementioned problem, but rest assured America's obsession with having a nice, green lawn adds to the overall crisis.

Carl -- What concerns me is

Carl -- What concerns me is this is being used for agricultural purposes under the encouragement of our Govt which is of course suppose to be keeping us safe. (haha)

A lot of people are totally unaware that parts of the gulf of Mexico around the mouth of the Mississippi is virtually dead due to the fertizlizer waste run off that goes into the river and then ends up in the gulf.

I don't even want to think about eating seafood from the Gulf anymore. At least not the Northern part.

The problem is what point is it to be free of terrorism and yet die because of the food you eat.

China 30 years ago virtually had very low Cancer rates. Not they have very high cancer rates which are directly attributed to polution rates in the country which now boast 10 of the top 20 most polluted rivers.

Wasn't there a movie with Julia Roberts that showed the devastating effects of pollution?

We can't get our health care system under control if we are litterally poisoning ourselves with the consent of this huge messy bureaucracy with absolutely no accountability.

Here is another Example of

Here is another Example of what happens when pollution starts poisoning the food supply.

China: Food poisoning deaths up in 2007

"Most of the fatal food poisoning incidents were caused by toxic seafood, meat and produce," Xinhua said.

It was not possible to verify whether the figures included all the food poisoning cases in China, a country of 1.3 billion people. Many cases in rural areas, where food is often mislabeled and sanitation problems are common, go unreported or are covered up by local authorities."

It should be noted that since GW Bush took office we have had MORE FOOD RECALLS DUE TO BOTULISM AND E COLI, than EVER BEFORE IN ALL COMBINED PAST ADMINISTRATIONS.

The govt is not only aiding

The govt is not only aiding in the poisoning of our food, but they are abetting in the poisoning of our water.

Meds lurking in U.S. drinking water

AP Reports:

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

On second thought, perhaps this could explain the dumbing of America. They are ingesting mood enhancing meds in their water. I wonder if this could be co-related to any voting patterns (ggg).

Hi pollchecker... Our

Hi pollchecker...

Our government could give a rats-butt less about our welfare. This nation and the world in general is addicted to unfettered "pirate capitalism".

They'll pulloff anything unless challenged by the courts and no doubt the dockets are full of such cases. It takes alot of bucks, patience, and perserverence to stop these "deep-pockets" corporate sob's.

China is wallowing in its own pollution and it's pirate capitalists, now quasi-communists are grinning ear-to-ear while their rivers are grossly polluted with chemicals. A few years ago they had a benzene spill that was "miles long" as it floated downriver. Also cases of food poisoning have risen by 30 percent across their country. The air pollution is so bad that businessmen and visitors in the know never rent a room above the 10th floor because you can't see anything out the windows above that level...!

Anybody that goes to the Chinese sponsored Olympics just might be risking their lives. I've been thinking that's just about the time for a major SARS outbreak...no?! : |

It's the type of nation where the well-to-do are only a few steps away from others who are having to spear rats with fire-hardened sticks, that are living in shacks while hoping to stay alive just a few days more. The rural, outlying areas have become disaster zones with rioting etc. due to illegal, questionable land grabs by the government on behalf of developers with below market level compensation.

I've read within the past couple of weeks that the Chinese government is finally establishing the concept of "property rights" where people buying homes etc., will actually have a deed to the property while satisfying their mortgage note. Property rights is an alien concept to communism and any other despotic system of government.

Interestingly property rights are being abrogated by our modern U.S. and state governments on behalf of "business" interests with uncompenstated or marginally compensated "takings" of property be they wetlands or in some cases simply for retail development...?!

So whether it's pollution, individual rights, property rights, or a government that's grossly failing its citenzry, it seems to be the order of the day and a sign of the times in which we live.

All folks can do is to look out for themselves, their families and their personal interests. It's almost impossible to save anyone outside of this aforementioned small zone of influence.

The unfettered, uncontrolled acquisition of wealth at any price is the undoing of the modern world. The fools in the Far East and other emerging countries are trying emulate the U.S. and the West, but little do they realize they are all a day late and a dollar short when it comes to resources. There's not enough to go around for our current 6.7 billion inhabitants with 10 billion projected by 2020. They are stripping the planet clean like marauding African "driver ants" on the march leaving nothing for future generations to come.

I'll provide a fascinating link for both edification and enjoyment. Click on the "go here" link to see the expanded version of this world population counter.
It even project the rate of habitat destruction...!

The unfettered, uncontrolled acquisition of wealth at any price is the undoing of the modern world

Yep, it is class warfare, plain and simple. And it's downright disgraceful when the GOP is more concerned about building a middle class in countries like India than their own middle class in America.

But then under the tenure of any Bush, a predictable thing happens.....the rich get richer, the poor gets poorer and the middle class (which pays all the taxes) shrinks substantially.

I will never understand why the middle class supports his policies. It defies logic. The only thing I can figure out is that they are still hoping one day they will be rich enough to get Bush's tax giveaway for the rich.

The worse part is the McCain supports GW's failed policies as if they worked. He's not that stupid.
