Having read most of the blogs and subsequent comments concerning the latest gun-related tragedy, and having participated in a few myself, I noticed the wildly disparate opinions regarding this incident and the purpose of the second amendment. While these incidents are tragic, there are many reasons, some never to be known, for these types of crimes. I'll not attempt to analyze these reasons here, but I will say this...banning firearms for law-abiding citizens is not the answer. Unfortunately, incidents like these are the assumed risks of life in a free society. The right to bear arms is not only intended for protection of oneself and one's property, but the right to defend oneself from the tyranny of government. Are we to allow only the police and the criminals to carry guns? I would like to point out just a few historical examples of what happens when these inalienable rights are infringed upon... In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. In 1911, Turkey established gun control. Germany established gun control in 1938. China established gun control in 1935. Guatemala established gun control in 1964. Uganda established gun control in 1970. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. An armed man is a citizen, while an unarmed man is a subject. As the saying goes...those that don't learn from history... So what is to stop this from happening here? One word...Nothing, save for eighty million gun owners.

this is true. Banning firearms won't stop the type of killings that happened last week.
Addressing the issues that caused these type of killings is the only way to make them stop once and for all.

My only logical conclusion
Submitted by mterry on February 19, 2008 - 9:51pm.My only logical conclusion to the idea of "gun control" is to master the ability to hit the target OR the assailant in the center of body mass every time under any condition.
As another of the 80 million, the only place I don't carry (where legal) is in the sheets, or in the shower...'cause it would rust in both places. (-:

My Glocks and my Bushmaster
Submitted by ekaton on February 20, 2008 - 2:37am.My Glocks and my Bushmaster won't rust. ;) Neither does my S&W .357 stainless steel snubbie. The 870 12 gauge may require a little extra care. I don't shower with them, but I do sleep with one of them on the nightstand, only so I can fight my way to the 870 leaning against the wall in the corner of the room. I pray I never have to use any of them for self defense. I'm not a hunter.

The problems that cause
Submitted by staunchdem on February 20, 2008 - 5:40am.The problems that cause shootings like those of recent days are not rooted in gun ownership.
Canada has more guns per capita than we do and their violent gun deaths are reportedly 1/7th of ours.
My only conclusion is that it is a societal problem, which could have so many explanations as to boggle the mind.
If you read the Federalist Papers you will find that the founding fathers intended for all to own a gun so that we would each be a militia member should an emergency exist.
Remember, we had no standing Army in those days so a strong militia was our only defense.
I rather doubt any gun control legislation is imminent, nor does it have a chance of being made law.
