Well folks, I normally don't get into this issue with too many people out there, but I think it's time to stand up for what is right...so here we go.

As we've all been aware, there have been an alarmingly increasing number of incidents involving the use of firearms by the deranged.

This almost always involves the gut wrenching tragedy of multiple deaths before the person committing these acts (perhaps in a moment of clarity...) puts themselves out of the reach of the legal system by turning a weapon on themselves. My heart goes out the the survivors of the incidents , as well as the families of the victims...

So why do we as a society lash out at the innocent in the aftermath of such a terrible event? I have some thoughts on the matter...

I think the Founders knew and recognized the idea that a free citizen included being able to resist tyranny. Even in ancient Rome, when a slave was freed, a weapon was placed in his hands as a symbol of that freedom.

The technology may have changed, but the idea has not. This IS the reasoning behind the Second Amendment. The reason that it is an Amendment, was that to the Founders of this nation, it was so blindingly obvious to them that they only belatedly saw the need to spell it out in law.

This need for government of any level to react to the tragedies involving firearms and the deranged, by punishing the innocent (by making new restrictions of firearms ownership) is pathetic. It is nothing more than the pandering to special interests for the maintenance of the money flow. Nothing more.

The simple fact of it is, if you object to firearms...don't own them. If being dependent on another for your security is what you are comfortable with, then please feel free to do so. Such is the glory of living in a free country, you GET to decide.

All I would do is to point out that the increasing abrogation of our rights and freedoms as enshrined by the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, by an ever increasingly aggressive and secretive government at all levels, says to me that the Founders had reason to make sure that we could resist the slide into total tyranny.

Additionally, in an every society, there are those that prey on the helpless or the weak. Protecting oneself from such aggression IS a basic HUMAN RIGHT.

Something for all of you supporters of a U.N./European Union style disarming of the population may wish to think on, is that without the right or the ability to resist, the people are ripe and easy pickings for anyone...be it crook, or politician...neither group of which is known for their adherence to the letter of the law.

Additionally, consider this, the level of investigation and training that most states require of the citizenry that wish to carry concealed firearms is heavy...very heavy.

Most states require finger printing, photos, and a rather extensive background and criminal check of a minimum of 10 years of the applicants prior history.

That would be IN ADDITION TO a very involved course in the legal side of use of a firearm, storage requirements, where you can and cannot carry said firearm, and ultimately you must prove that you can shoot competently too...and this for most people is just the beginning.

So you would think that after SO MUCH placed in their way, the people that are successful in getting such a permit would be by implication seen by government and police as "reasonable" people right?

Wrong. Every time that someone lashes out at society with a firearm, the only ones that get punished are the people that have already proven that they are competent to carry such an additional burden.

WHY?

Why do we allow the politicians to do this? The hysterical screams of the anti-firearms groups are at best a thin veneer over rather obvious agendas here gentle reader. I won't waste your time restating the stunningly simple here, but I ask, has this country grown so sure of itself that we can implicitly trust any level of government to "protect us"?

I do not believe this for a single instant. Neither should you. All you have to do is look at the openly militarized police state that were becoming, and you'll see that the Founders were spot on when they said,

" A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Basically in plain language here gentle reader, is the written guarantee in law, that the People of this nation are COLLECTIVELY the DECIDER and the DEFENDER. Not some puffed up, self important, short timer living in the official residence.

We, as the ultimate decider of the path that this nation takes, have the rather considerable responsibility to ourselves to be ABLE to resist tyranny in any form. And yes gentle reader, this includes armed force if there is no other recourse. Whether it is from the thug on the street, of the occupants of high elected office, WE decide...NOT them.

For those of you with a bit of a sense of humor, I would contend that Government is like non-consensual S&M, with the second amendment as the only safe word.

(Apologies to those I just offended...some times the sad humor of an old man just escapes the bottle is all...)

the issues behind these

the issues behind these killings are not guns.

The issues are mental health and how this country continues to ignore mental health like it's some 15th century plague. I guess we think if we don't talk about it, then it doesn't exist.

It's not even a matter of health insurance as there have been many incidents of well off, insured parents with violent children.

No, unfortunately we have no mental health system or mental health policy in this country. And until we do, until we address these issues, we will continue to have these type of incidents. You will not be able to prevent it no matter how much you try.

No the single way to stop this from happening again is to address the cause....mental health. But I guess since we don't have physical health in this country, talking about mental health is just wasted time.

In our country we do three things with people with mental health issues: ignore them, emprison them, kill them.

PS -- your mentally "deranged" title is kinda offensive. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but the kid wasn't deranged. He just went off his meds and as a result his perception of reality was altered. Now deranged might be technically correct in that he proably was deranged when he went off. However, I don't know, the title just comes across negatively. Not all people with mental health issues are deranged as I am sure you are aware. Just making a point.

You are correct in that we

You are correct in that we DO very definitely need to address the dual (and inseparable) issues of mental and physical heath care in this country.

You are equally correct in your characterization of this county's treatment towards those that suffer the burden of mental illness.

However, we part company with my use of the word "deranged". This was not aimed at any one perpetrator of any one act. This was used in a general sense for the group that would seek to express their inner rage through the use of a firearm in an attempt to harm others without just cause.
This type of thing should be considered the actions of a deranged mind.

I understand that some may see my use as different from my intention, so in that light, I would say that the views, opinions, and insights here are my own and not in anyway to be considered as attempting to single anyone out.

That being said, I'd also like to say thank you for challenging me on it, not only will it help me to become a better writer, but it also helps me to see a wider area for future composition.

Good article, mostly good

Good article, mostly good comments. I have read, though, that this was not so much a case of "being off his meds" as that he was on them in the first place. Prozac has the know side effect of causing serious problems as well as preventing some of them. As our society becommes more and more drugged, especially kids, expect to see more such "derangements."

You're absolutely right

You're absolutely right there. We as a society need to brace hard and deep, when the 5 to 12 year olds that we are currently drugging for the most inane reasons (almost always for the convenience of the schools)hit puberty, and come off the drugs (in most cases).

In all fairness, teachers have a seriously tough time doing their jobs these days. I don't think that is out of line to say that a teacher that cares is one of the unsung heroes in society, so there are simply cases where this needs to be done for the teacher's sanity (if not out right safety).

I've also noticed a disturbing trend to take what were "disturbance prone kids" that were a nuisance when I was in school (eons ago)and declare them to be ADHD (or whatever the "term de jour" is) and drug the crap out them. Both more readily AND more often.

Back in my day a lot of seriously messed up kids where on Ritalin (spelling??) and that was bad. The volumes of research that has time, and time again, indicated that this type of medication can (but not always) provoke a high number of incidents of violent backlash and some serious antisocial behavior, are too many to ignore.

The tendency that I'm noticing these days is to be giving ~very~ young kids even more powerful drugs than Ritalin, and sometimes a cocktail of these serious drugs INCLUDING Ritalin.

Does anyone out there really know what they're creating in the way of potential in these child patients when they become adults?

So I think you are spot on pcnot, in your prediction of a rise in these tragic events that seem to happen with increasing frequency. You don't need to have a crystal ball to see this one coming.
