The Bush administration explicitly endorsed the use of waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods against al Qaeda suspects in a pair of secret memos to the CIA in 2003 and 2004, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The previously undisclosed classified memos were requested by then CIA Director George Tenet more than a year after the start of the secret interrogations, the newspaper reported, citing administration and intelligence officials familiar with the documents.

A White House spokesman had no comment on the report.

According the newspaper, intelligence officials sought cover from the White House because they were worried about a possible backlash if details of the interrogation program became public.

Justice Department lawyers signed off on the agency's interrogation methods beginning in 2002, but senior CIA officials were troubled that White House policymakers had never endorsed the program in writing, the Post reported.

Repeated requests by the CIA chief for a paper trail reflected growing worries within the agency that the administration might later distance itself from decisions about the handling of captured al Qaeda leaders, the Post said, citing former intelligence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The officials told the newspaper Tenet first pressed the White House for written approval in June 2003 during a meeting with members of the National Security Council.

A few days later, Tenet received a brief memo conveying the administration's approval for the CIA's interrogation methods, the officials were cited as saying.

Tenet made a second request for written approval in June 2004, after the public outcry over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, the Post said.

Administration officials confirmed the existence of the memos, but neither they nor former intelligence officers would describe the still classified documents in detail, the newspaper reported.

More and more of President

More and more of President Bush's actions against the Geneva Conventions will be made public. We are seeing more of the GOP base backing away from McCain since these announcements. Many of us who left the party years ago are now standing up to the lies and corruption of this Administration.

The pressure from the RNC is so great that Senator McCain will fold up like a cheap patio chair. Even W.F. Buckley Jr's son as left the Republican Party. Christopher resigned from the National Review as he saw the corruption as a negative within the GOP.

How typical of Bush-Cheney.

How typical of Bush-Cheney. Encourage and support immoral actions by others and do everything possible to maintain deniability.

Tenet should immediately be

Tenet should immediately be charged. I was just following orders is not a valid defense. Since he asked for the written verification he knew what he was doing was wrong.

The memos should be de-classified because obviously they are only classified to keep the American people unaware of what the Imperial Executive was doing while violating the law. That is not a valid reason for making them classified.

Once Tenet testifies and the memos are released, Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Pelosi, Reid, and anyone in their offices aware of and that endorsed the program should also be charged and jailed.

Give them all their day in court. It's more than they would give us.

This is the only way to restore faith in our Republic. Failure to do so will cause irreparable harm.

In the book The Dark Side"

In the book The Dark Side" by Jane Mayer all of the abuse is written about. Cheney and his aide,David Addington with the help of Justice Dept. lawyer, John Yoo, wrote the memo in secret about the terrible methods of torture to use. They even kept this secret from Bush for a time. Here is a summary of the book:

"In the days immediately following September 11, the most powerful people in the country were panic-stricken. The radical decisions about how to combat terrorists and strengthen national security were made in a state of utter chaos and fear, but the key players, Vice President Dick Cheney and his powerful, secretive adviser David Addington, used the crisis to further a long-held agenda to enhance presidential powers to a degree never known in U.S. history, and obliterate constitutional protections that define the very essence of the American experiment.

"The Dark Side is a dramatic, riveting, and definitive narrative account of how the United States made terrible decisions in the pursuit of terrorists around the world - decisions that not only violated the Constitution, which White House officials took an oath to uphold, but also hampered the pursuit of Al Qaeda. In gripping detail, acclaimed New Yorker writer and bestselling author Jane Mayer relates the impact of these decisions - U.S.-held prisoners, some of them completely innocent, were subjected to treatment more reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition than the twenty-first century." "In all cases, whatever the short-term gains, there were incalculable losses in terms of moral standing, our country's place in the world, and its sense of itself."

It was tough to read and the more I read the angrier I became. This administration needs to be held accountable for these things as well as many other criminal acts.

Yes griff, and we keep

Yes griff, and we keep putting them back in office. The GOP should melt down just like the credit mess. Let Obama have the white house and see if he shows signs of integrity. If he doesn't we must stay as a team and locate a new movement. I have a hunch that Christopher Buckley would be interested in this movement.

The prez race is going to

The prez race is going to get much more dirty. What, you say does this have to do with the story? Everything. If McCain wins, even with a dem congress, the entirety of the bush/cheney crimes will be buried. If Obama win, along with a dem congress-absent Pelosi who has refused to even investigate-then HOPEFULLY investigations like the Senate Watergate Hearings will happen. Unfortunately, other than 5-6 senators I can't think of any with the prestige, honor and the stones to actually bring out the truth.(I also can't see the courts backing congress like they did back during Watergate. Now whoever has the gold makes the rules and owns the courts)

And nothing will happen.

And nothing will happen. Pelosi has already said it. "Impeachment is off the table". There will be no prosecution of anyone for anything. They will all walk away as if no crimes were committed. This administration knew they could do whatever they damned well pleased.

One thing we do need to be

One thing we do need to be thankful for, is that Joe Biden said that he would pursue criminal charges against Bush/Cheney even after they left office...But, here in the real world, it's just a dream for all of us. We'll hear the usual, "It's best for the country to let bygones be bygones". I'd expect Bush and Cheney in jail about as much as I'd expect to see myself with a winning lottery ticket!! I don't know who has the nude pics of Nancy Pelosi...but I hope they keep them hidden!!! LOL

As we all know, the problems

As we all know, the problems the new president, and I'm sure it will be Obama as it looks now, will be so great that these criminal matters of the Bush/Cheney group will have to be put on the back burner for a time, at least. Maybe Kucinich and Wexler will take up the reigns again and get it moving. Let's hope so.

However, do they want to get bogged down in something like this in the first few months of a new administration when the Iraq war and the economy will be front and center? Obama has said he is going to review the signing statements and see, if any of them are illegal, and if so, do something about those.

I can't wait for the door to hit them all on the way out on Jan 20, 2009! Just think, we may never have to see or listen to W again!!! What a good thought.
