Republican Duncan Hunter vows to kill ports deal

One of the most prominent House Republicans on military issues said Thursday he would try to scuttle a Dubai-based company's effort to manage U.S. ports as lawmakers' complaints about the Bush administration's handling of the issue continued to spread.

"Dubai cannot be trusted," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and normally one of the administration's most trusted allies. He called the United Arab Emirates "a bazaar for terrorist nations" and asserted that the United States should not permit DP World to take over significant operations at six U.S. ports.

"I intend to do everything I can to kill the deal," Hunter said.

Across Capitol Hill, lawmakers criticized the Bush administration anew following disclosures that the United States had launched a fresh investigation Tuesday into a proposed business deal by a second Dubai-owned company. Also sparking the furor was word of a previously unconfirmed investigation into a separate transaction by a leading Israeli software firm.

The government initially approved DP World's $6.8 billion purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. But on Sunday, the administration agreed to a 45-day investigation of potential security risks to quell a political backlash.

"Too little, too late," Hunter said.

Opening a hearing on the matter, Hunter said it was "quite remarkable" that the administration did not initially undertake a full review of security implications, given that the company is owned by the United Arab Emirates _ "a bazaar for terrorist nations to receive prohibited components from sources from the free world and from the non-free world."

Hunter listed instances between 1994 and 2003 in which he said the country helped move materials for weapons of mass destruction, such as heavy water and high-speed electrical switches, to Pakistan, Iran and other countries. He plans to introduce legislation that would require U.S. companies to be the sole owners of infrastructure critical to national security.

The chairman's sharp remarks underscore the political tempest the White House has run into at a time when events in Iraq and renewed interest in the administration's failures in responding to Hurricane Katrina have pushed President Bush's popularity downward.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has sided with the administration on the DP World deal. He and the White House have praised the United Arab Emirates as a key ally in the fight against terrorism.

Congressional GOP leaders want to wait for the results of the administration's new DP World investigation before considering legislation to delay or block the deal.

House Democrats tried to force a debate and vote on legislation Thursday that would require the 45-day security review and congressional approval of the takeover. That effort failed on a procedural, largely party-line vote.

Leading Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee also asked the administration for details about all pending reviews of foreign business deals and any that have been conducted since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The U.S. has conducted only 25 such investigations among 1,600 business transactions reviewed by the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States since 1988. The panel, made up of 12 government representatives, judges the security risks of foreign companies buying or investing in American industry.

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, complained that he learned about the second Dubai investigation from news reports, despite regular meetings and discussions with the administration and others on the ports issue recently.

"Maybe they still haven't gotten their act together over the last few days," said King, R-N.Y.

Senior U.S. officials told lawmakers they will try to inform Congress better in the future.

"We clearly have to do quite a bit in finding ways to provide you more promptly with the information you need," Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt told the Senate Banking Committee.

Dubai International Capital LLC confirmed Thursday it faced investigation over its plans to buy a British precision-engineering company, Doncasters Group Ltd., with plants in Georgia and Connecticut that make parts used in engines for military aircraft and tanks.

The same U.S. review panel also is investigating plans by an Israeli software company, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., to purchase a smaller U.S. rival.

Kimmitt said U.S. officials notified congressional leaders and oversight committees about the second Dubai-related investigation Monday. The company's lawyers were notified the following day.

This Dubai Ports World dealshould have it's security of the US shores simply because the Coast Guard, the local police, and Customs simply cannot be everywhere given the traffic coming in at some of these ports.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ADMINISTRATION STANCE HOWEVER AND IN MY OPINION.

It is NOT about the Middle East
It is NOT about ARABS
It id NOT about security
It is NOT about UAE's help on terror

IT IS ABOUT ONLY ONE THING and the reson GWB has threatened a veto if the Congress of either or both parties try to scuttle it.

This is about enhancing the fortunes of the BUSH family and the other investors like the SNOW family and who knows who else.

Members of THIS administration... and leave George W. Bush out of this, initially at least... thought that while the Congress was distracted and while the country was thinking about Katrina, spying, terrorism, Iraq and all the other things, they could sneak one through the goalposts.

My opinion is that GWB was NOT TOLD in advance to give him deniability...period.

Then when he had to be told and found out the truth which the American people still don't seem to have or care about, he did a complete 180 and of course threatened a VETO further destroying any shred of credibility he had left.

PERIOD !!!

Handing the ports over to Dubai is like turning Jewish day care centers over to Hitler.

Don't let Bush's threatened veto of the "ports deal", fool you. Even, tho' the right side of the aisle has vowed to override his veto. Here's what's really going on, boys and girls. It's an election year and by the time voting day gets here this administration will suffer even further exposure for being the traitors that they are.

So, the boys and girls in congress defeat the port deal, Dubyuh vetos their legislation, the boys and girls override the veto, and then start claiming en masse, they they deserve re-election for not walking in lockstep with the Bush Crime family.......then resident nazi Karl Rove spins the whole episode under deep cover, and the rightwing fearful american sheep buy the spin. And with Diebold's help the fascist right, once again makes fools out of the american people, the system and the "also corrupt" left and pulls off another coup de gras on the woefully unenlightened american public. They do it right in our faces, once again , all the while chanting the NeoCon battle cry; "go f_ _ k yourself, whaddya gonna do about it ?!?!?"

Oh, and don't put it past these traitors to set off a tactical nuke in some "nothin'" inconsequential american city, like, say Oklahoma City, and claim the boogeyman terrorists did it." Because if they toast a few thousand citizens and a square mile or 2, that's not really too much collateral damage on their carefully orchestrated road to fascism.

We as a people have barely blinked at a few thousand at 9/11 victims and a few thousand more Kartrina folk....we've still allowed these despots to rule with impunity....what's a few more thousand to make us even more fearful and stupid?? Paul Wolfowitz loves it when a good plan comes together.

War and domestic fear are good for obscene corporate profiteering and other greedy oligarchy fascist things.

Oh, and one more thing. This is not a conspiracy, it's just a really evil business plan.

I think Congressman Hunter has chosen a very significant issue, and cites extraordinary intelligence of UAE complicity in WMD components arms sales. If that isnt a deal killer, then what is?

People should consider that ever since Bush claimed fiat authority re NSA operations, in December, all of the Bush Juntas illegal excesses have been piggybacked on NSA.

The result has been a political holocaust, and vacuum of legal authority. Clearly Hunter cites excellent military intelligence in exposing UAE based WMD arms deals. This proffer supports the common sense position of a bi-partisan super majority in the American electorate and Congress.

Bush Middle East policy is dangerously destabilizing the entire region. The trend is straight toward unforeseeably higher danger for Israel. Geo-political scenarios have long recognized that the Middle East possesses uniquely sensitive nuclear and diplomatic balance of power equasions.

Middle Eastern money in the US economy is significant. It needs to be recognized as a potentially volatile, diplomatically loaded element. Trusting an Arab state with operating our most vulnerable security ingress is equal to putting out a welcome mat for Al Qaeda. If we cannot defeat this deal, we may as well surrender and accept Islam. It is tantamount to surrender.

How come Hunter has such good "military intelligence" - that the White House does not have - on nuclear material being moved thru Dubai ports with knowledge of the Dubai sheikhs? Doesn't anyone tell duhduh and co. anything at all? Hunter said the evidence was from 1994 through 2003 - and he will pass the info on to the White House. Mighty generous of him. Something really stinks here.
Read: another preemptive strike on a country not threatening us. We need to use the ports of Dubai (at the Straits of Hormuz) to launch a credible attack on Iran. The deal will stand after some huffing and puffing by the Repugs who hope to hold onto the House this year. Big show.
