Dems demand immediate vote on ports debacle

March 5, 2006 06:25 AM / Capitol Hillbillies .
Democrats used their weekly radio address Saturday to scold the Bush administration over the Dubai ports management deal.

The address also gave a national stage to the party's candidate to replace former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., who was sentenced Friday to eight years and four months in prison for corruption.

Francine Busby, a school board member in a San Diego-area district, said Democrats want an immediate vote on the controversial ports deal, an increase in the screening of arriving cargo and more resources for the Coast Guard.

Congressional GOP leaders want to wait for the results of the administration's new investigation of DP World, a company owned by the government of Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates, before considering legislation to delay or block it on security grounds.

The government initially approved DP World's $6.8 billion purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which would let the company take over significant operations at six major U.S. ports. But last weekend, the Bush administration agreed to a 45-day investigation of potential security risks to quell a political backlash.

House Democrats tried to force a debate and vote on legislation Thursday that would require the 45-day security review and congressional approval of the takeover. That effort failed on a procedural, largely party-line vote.

"Given the record of this administration, 'trust us' is not a safe enough answer for the American people," Busby said, accusing the administration and Republican-led Congress of underfunding ports security and ignoring warnings on Hurricane Katrina.

"At our ports, like our borders, Americans expect and deserve a Congress committed to stopping people who are intent on breaking the law," she said.

Busby did not mention Cunningham in her broadcast but promised to be "an independent voice" in Congress. She faces several Republicans in a special election April 11 to replace Cunningham in the strongly Republican 50th Congressional District that takes in suburbs and beaches north of San Diego.

Cunningham resigned last year and pleaded guilty to accepting $2.4 million from defense contractors and others in exchange for steering government contracts their way.

The problem is with any of our port business being in any un- American hands. These ports are governed by elected boards and they personally are who we the sovereign people are expecting to be running all the operations at the ports, we are granting them money through our taxes to do this work not to outsource our taxes abroad. We have allowed many manufacturing and high teck jobs to be sent offshore, we have to keep some things at home as we also need to be allowed to pay our own bills by work we do here. Also in light of the world today it makes no sense at all to have others in any way involved in what or how things are coming into or going out of the US. These are the things only Americans are qualified to do, when our very survival as a people is dependent on established loyalty and second sense even ESP is required to ensure our safety, remember it was the second sensitivity that found the terrorist at the Port Angeles boarder we the people are asking that that kind of heightened diligence and self preservation sense be operational in all our dealings with unknown loyalties and quantities.

I tied 4 stories together, and show how each of them connects to this issue, and this info raises questions that the President hasn't even been asked yet

The blog post is lengthy, but it's well worth the read and any attention that can be spared

http://royallykranked.blogspot.com/2006/03/various-things-to-consider-with-ports.html

Here's what the stories cover

A suppressed Dept Homeland Security report that criticized lax immigration standards in the Northern Marianas islands-the report stated the the US Commonwealth of the NM islands offered a target rich with US Naval interests stopping over for a short visit or Port of Call-Get this-the report was scuttled by Jack Abramoff after he got a heads up about it from the Dept of Justice-The authors of the report-2 DoJ personnel, one of which was a US Attorney-were reassigned afterwards

The 2nd story deals with the lack of a US strategy as it relates to tracking terrorist funding & moneylaundering around the world-In particular

To quote a from the article I linked to

"The government has identified 26 "priority" countries that it considered particularly vulnerable to exploitation by terrorist financiers, who may take advantage of lax financial controls and loosely regulated or nonexistent laws to launder money in support of terrorist attacks, officials said."

We don't know if the UAE is on that list, but we need to find out, and if the UAE is on that list, then the President needs to explain how that should reassure anyone when it comes to the UAE running US ports

The 3rd story highlighted how the Govt has missed DOZENS of Sept 11 security deadlines-to quote the article I linked to

"A law signed by President Bush on Nov. 25, 2002, set a July 1, 2004, deadline for ships and ports to tighten security amid fears that nuclear weapons might be smuggled in a cargo container.

"The Coast Guard largely accomplished the undertaking. But much still remains
undone: A report on how a grant program for shippers and ports would work is more
than a year late; a report on cargo container security is eight months overdue; a national security plan for marine transportation is well past its April 1 due date."

This article appeared in October, so add five months to all the missed dealines in the story

And the last article I linked to was the most direct in terms of problems with the
UAE, as it's about an MI5 report dealing with companies, university depts and govt
organizations that traffic in WsMD and arms sales

The report called the UAE to most important country to watch in this respect, with 24 front companies, that, as the report states, "they have procured goods and/or technology for weapons of mass destruction programmes."

And the UAE is called a hub for these kinds of businesses and that the recipients of these countries arms trafficking are Iran, Pakistan & India

Now here's a thought. Why not bring our military home to it's rightful place, and duty,to protect our country from our enemies attacking our shores. I know its simplistic thinking in the minds of many. But consider, for a moment, if the military stood up and said "Hell no! We won't take it no more, if you want it, go do it yourselves we're not undergoing more death for you! The job we were hired to do is to protect our country, not to enforce our form of government on any other peoples.
