California GOP Rep quits

March 11, 2006 02:22 AM / Capitol Hillbillies .
U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly abruptly announced Friday that he is dropping his re-election bid because of a medical condition, leaving Republicans without a candidate just before the state filing deadline.

"I have been dealing with a medical issue that is yet to be resolved," the 62-year-old Republican said in a statement Friday. "Although I am hopeful it will be resolved positively, it would not be fair to my constituents and supporters should I be forced to withdraw from the race midyear."

He offered no details on the medical condition. A spokesman did not immediately return calls.

There were no other Republicans in the race. Democrats must gain 15 seats to win a majority in the House.

The primary election for the Democratic nomination is June 6.

Gallegly, elected to Congress in 1986, represents most of Ventura County and parts of Santa Barbara County, northwest of Los Angeles.

The 10-term congressman won re-election in 2004 with more than 60 percent of the vote.

He serves on the House Judiciary, International Relations and Resources committees and is a member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

This sounds fishy. What is he really quiting for? Or is this another case of " oops, about to be investigated better resign now"? Or does some secret government agency have some dirt on him?

Elton Gallegly is a great guy. He has a moral compass, isn't an adult spoiled brat, and has done a great job for us. I live in his district, and he is by far a stellar statesman. He's in the ranks of Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo decency. Whatever ails him, I wish him a speedy and full recovery. He's not a slime ball (ok, here comes my disclaimer- that I know of).

Another reason that political parties distort our election process. Why must there be a "Republican" candidate?

To S.M. and others - it really doesn't matter if you think your guy is one of the only good ones. We have to think in terms of what these men and women have done to the country as a group. The act of not speaking up when things are OBVIOUSLY wrong is as damaging as leading us into the problems in the first place. And it is not what a REPRESENTATIVE of the People is supposed to be doing.

I couldn't care less if your guy is a good one or a slime ball. What matters is the direction his party has sent us - WITHOUT ANY opposition by anybody that has an 'R' next to their title. That's unacceptable for ANY representative of the people. Is the Party more important than the nation? is the Party's view "perfect"? Do we worship our elected leaders? Is this a monarchy or a democracy?

Look at the actions he's gone along with. Do you support those? I don't, and therefore I cannot support ANY incumbent Republican running for re-election. They've all helped change the character of this nation to the worst its been in my lifetime. They're not alone, of course, as the media has helped by ignoring its duty, and the electorate has helped by also ignoring its duty.

Your comments about whether Gellegly is a good person or not are part of that same ignorance of duty by voters. Tell me what he's supported that have truly benefited our nation, and then we can talk about whether he deserves any respect as a representative of We the People of this nation (not just his district).

I don't think so. Ever.
