Bush's plummenting polls

March 6, 2006 06:53 AM / Bush Leagues .
By MICHAEL MALIK

February was not a good month for President Bush. Reminders of Hurricane Katrina, dissension by congressional Republicans and a bloody month in Iraq contributed to a new series of low poll numbers.

Bush can not reverse a slump in his approval rating with a tour around the country or a national address, said Democratic pollster Mark Mellman, president of the Mellman Group.

"He needs to change reality," Mellman said. "This is not a public relations problem. This is a reality problem. Real world events are cutting strongly against him right now."

Four national polls place Bush's job approval at 34 to 39 percent, at or near record lows for his administration. Several other polls rate him at or slightly above 40 percent, also at or near record lows for those polls.

At this point in Bush's presidency, in the second February of his second term, his job approval ranks third lowest in the modern polling era. Only President Harry S. Truman, at 37 percent, and President Richard Nixon, at 24 percent, were lower, according to Gallup polls.

According to the most recent CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, 47 percent of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling terrorism. That is lowest number recorded by the poll for that category. Other national polls are showing similar drops in approval numbers on terrorism.

Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll, said the deal to allow a company based in the United Arab Emirates to run six U.S. ports, which two-thirds of Americans oppose, may have had some impact on the low approval rating. The deal also provoked rebukes from several Republicans in Congress.

Several pollsters said they don't know what effect the new video of Bush being warned about the levees breaking in New Orleans will have on his approval rating. The transcripts of the video had been released and widely reported earlier, but in politics a picture is worth a thousand words.

However, most pollsters said Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident did not affect Bush's approval ratings.

During February, Bush campaigned for new initiatives announced during his State of the Union address, but most news stories about those issues were overshadowed by the continued coverage of administration mishaps.

There is little Bush can do to stop his numbers from sliding further, several pollsters said.

G. Terry Madonna, director of the Franklin and Marshall Keystone Poll, an independent poll, recognizes the same problem.

"Baring some major national event or international event, I think it's going to be very hard for him to get back to the approval rating hovering around 50 or 51," Madonna said.

Several pollsters said Bush could receive a significant bump in the polls if the economy improves.

Most polls put Bush's approval rating with Republicans in the low 80s, not any cause for alarm. But where Bush is losing support is with independent voters _ only about a third support him _ and that is a cause for alarm for Republicans running for re-election in November.

Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, of Lake Research Partners, said Democrats will try to nationalize the mid-term elections.

"You don't want to send George Bush to back his team," she said.

Lake said Republicans will try to localize the elections, emphasizing their achievements at home.

Republican pollster David Winston, president of the Winston Group, said Bush needs to do a better job of combining the issues of the war on terror and the war in Iraq if he wants his numbers to improve. Democrats will try to separate the issues so they can attack him more easily, Winston said.

Madonna said he "presumes" Bush's numbers can tumble farther because other presidents have been there.

"There are a lot of things that can occur that favor him and disfavor," Madonna said. "We just have to wait and see what happens."

Four national polls put Bush's approval ratings below 40 percent:

_ CNN/USA Today/Gallup _ 38 percent

_ Fox News/Opinion Dynamics _ 39 percent

_ Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg _ 38 percent

_ CBS News _ 34 percent

Two other polls reported numbers above 40 percent:

_ Rasmussen _ 42 percent

_ Cook/RT Strategies _ 40 percent

All the polls are based on interviews conducted in late February and early March, and each has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. For more details about the polls, visit Real Clear Politics, which links to news and polls about politics: www.realclearpolitics.com/polls.html

The biggest crime of the Repugnicans is this: We get to listen to this Imposter-President mangle the English language and speak to us as if we were retarded babies (which is what he is). Forget all the in-your-face violations of the Constitution, the illegal incarcerations, the fixed elections, the outright corruption and fraud being perpetrated by these criminals. I just want this fucker to stop making any kind of comments or speeches. Get him off my tube! I've been getting sick every time he appears on the tube since he began his 2000 campaign. Enough is enough. Does anyone have a part of the world to donate to this fuckhead to get him the fuck out of here? Maybe a piece of his Saudi fuck-buddies desert? I am sure that they can spare some sand for King George so he can make pronouncements to the lizards.

Just because Bush SAYS he doesn't pay attention to polls doesnt mean he doesn't. Stop and count all the other lies he has told to prove my point. Maybe Bush doesn't pay attentio but Karl{Goebbels}Rove does. Ever notice how quick Bush hits the donors each time the polls drop?

Poll taking is a very large industry in the U.S. Who commissions the political polls--the political parties. Anyone who says Bush, Rove and associates pay no attention is out of touch with reality. Rove's job is to come up with a scheme to improve the situation. The good news is his boss has become a hard if not impossible sell, yet to 40% of those polled, Rove's boy is tops. Go figure!!

As for Bush's comments about not paying attention to polls, over the past 5 years I have learned to believe the opposite of what he says--the words are a full 180 degrees from the reality.

I totally agree with "canadiantrain's" predictions the only addition I would make is that Bush would declare himself dictator before the 2008 elections and proceed to lock anyone up that did not like his stand. In addition he we probably manufacture another "event" like 911 to ease his move to dictator. Why shouldn't he use the event scenario, since the 911 investigation was a sham.

The past 5+ years have been an exercise in manipulation by the administration. There is no depth to which they will not sink. That said, I wouldn't bet against an 'event' of some kind taking place, that miraculously creates another public rallying opportunity for W. If not, I'm afraid the only option is declaring martial law which I'm sure will follow the next 'terrorist' attack.

EASY FIX FOR REPUBLICANS. i really should be a paid strategist. with all the expenditure of war, it should be easy to find enough cash to send each household $100. this will bring his numbers right back to pre-war highs. if that's too expensive, a 13" color TV will get him 65-70% approval overnight. if that's too expensive, a six of icy cold budweiser will keep him in the high 50s until midsummer. you have to remember, we're dealing with the american people here. stick to the basics. always works.

The "Polls" are providing us with favorable news but what I really want to know is just who are the people who give GWB favaroable ratings? Not by name but by demographics, income and other profile information.

He doesn't care a bit about the polls and I won't be surprised if he finds a way to stay in power past his term. Neither the Congress nor the SCOTUS will try and stop him. They'll do what they've done with every other illegal and criminal act he's committed they try and pass some legilation or the court will say it's ok. It doessn't matter what thisguy does he owns all the power and essentially has no real opposition to worry about anymore.

Hey. Why can't Homeland Seurity use its satelites and its 50,000 secret agents to find that missing $3 trillion dollars the Pentagon can't find?

Rumor has it, AIPAC continues to be under investigation for possible spying for Israel--a treasonable offense. So why is this moron John Bolton giving a keynote speech at the recent AIPAC conference? Shouldn't Bolton register as an Israeli agent?

The average American isn't stupid . I suspect the political pendulum will soon reverse course due to the failure of the republicans to adequately deal with the issues confronting the US . Dumbya might not admit he watches the polls , but I think we all know better than that . Congressmen are watching too . Note the increasing number of repulicans in Congrees that find it impossible to blidly follow what has to be described as an inept administration . I think the reps wanted to build a '1000 year reich' but have found that this dream is foolish no matter who has it .

The 40% that are giving Bush a good rating are the sheeple that get their news from Fox and other corporate owned media and who have been brainwashed into thinking that Bush is right and is a good president (which his not). My sister is like that. She agrees with Bush trying to prosecute reporters who are writing the truth that have not been bought out by corporate Amerika. She and her husband who is an engineer own several homes. They have not been affected by the loss of jobs in this country and that is why I believe they still support Bush. A lot of people in this country have a very selfish attitude, if it does not affect their lives they don’t are about it. Every night I pray that someday they will the truth before it’s too late.

My mother's a Democrat (been trying to get her to vote Constitution Party--she almost did) and I tease her by reminding her we're related to Bush (12th cousin).

I think the insanity went on THAT branch of the Pierce family....

Can we impeach Bush for being an idiot?
