Shoot first, take questions later

February 15, 2006 05:28 AM / FUBAR .

By MARTIN SCHRAM

No doubt you are as sick and tired as I am at having to listen to the whining of the White House press corps. Just because they are not informed in a timely fashion every time a vice president shoots someone.

No wonder people think that this gang that Spiro Agnew famously labeled "nattering nabobs of negativism" doesn't love America enough to write a positive story. After all, Vice President Cheney has gone hunting hundreds of times in his political career. But you can't name one time when one newsperson wrote one good news story about any of Cheney's pals who survived a sporting event without getting shot by the veep.

Instead, on Monday, the reporters wasted the valuable time of President Bush's press secretary by asking why the White House withheld for a full day the news that at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday the vice president accidentally shot someone.

The reporters also wondered why a bloated presidential communications staff of trained professionals let the news be leaked by an amateur leaker, a private citizen. Don't these reporters realize that Katharine Armstrong is not just the owner of the ranch and a loyal Republican, but is herself a trained lobbyist so she knows how to do things? She leaked the news to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, that a 78-year-old Texas lawyer, Harry Whittington, had stepped into Cheney's line of fire and, as she colorfully explained, "got peppered pretty well."

(It became less laughable, however, on Tuesday when doctors said a piece of the birdshot lodged in Whittington's heart, causing a mild heart attack.)

Reporters seemed preoccupied with the fact that Bush had great difficulty in discovering just who was the triggerman. For some reason, they seemed to doubt the word of Bush press secretary Scott McClellan. The reporters seemed flummoxed when McClellan tipped his uncommunicative hand by lapsing into the passive/intransitive verb tenses that politicians and their flacks traditionally choose when they want to fuzz the truth.

What McClellan's version seemed to say was that, many hours after the shooting, newsworthy factoids kept walking into the White House on their own, unaccompanied by a person who could have been questioned further. (As in: So, who pulled the trigger?) McClellan: "...there was information that we were continuing to learn about throughout the course of that evening and into early Sunday morning. The initial report that we received was that there had been a hunting accident. We didn't know who all was involved, but a member of his party was involved in that hunting accident. And then additional details continued to come in overnight."

Bush first heard about the shooting from chief of staff Andrew Card and later, his deputy chief-and-top-schemer Karl Rove. But the White House press corps unpatriotically refused to accept obvious fact that the problem really began with President Clinton. After all, Clinton was the one who first told us an acceptable presidential policy could be "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Beyond a lack of patriotism, most journalists also are not compassionate enough to feel the pain of a president who simply cannot get good intelligence. The same Washington journalists who wouldn't cut Bush some slack for telling the world that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction were also skeptical about the White House version that Bush was kept ignorant for hours (how many was carefully fuzzed) about the identity of this lone Texas triggerman.

Why does the press corps find it so hard to believe that maybe Bush couldn't find a reliable source on it? Maybe Texas is a place like Iraq where good HUMINT (that's top secret code for human intelligence) is hard to find? Presidential loneliness can be poignant. We remember President Nixon, as antiwar protesters massed in Washington, sneaking out of the White House well after midnight and visiting the brightly lit Lincoln Memorial, where he chatted in painful awkwardness with stunned student protesters.

One night soon, Bush may be moved to visit the gleaming, domed Jefferson Memorial to commiserate with the ghost of the only other president whose veep shot a man. That one was no accident. Vice President Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Back then, President Jefferson faced no huge nattering White House press corps voicing doubts about the details. And it only took a century and a half before a patient America got the riveting account of it in "Burr," a wonderful novel disguised as a memoir.

Gore Vidal, please call your publisher. Your country needs a sequel.

Guns don't shoot people--Dick Cheney shoots people!

Posted by Ex-Caliber at February 15, 2006 06:40 AM

"Additional details continued to come in overnight" ??? How are they communicating ? By carrier pigeon ?

The good news is...they've finally found the Weapon of Mass Destruction! It's Cheney!

Special treatment for VIPs?!

Let's get this straight. A car-load of fat-cat politicians, lobbyists and lawyers are driving along a back country road when they flush a covey of quail. The driver slams on the brakes, and they all jump out of the vehicle with shotgun barrels blazing. Then, when the shooting stops the brave, fearless hunters start picking up the dead and the wounded birds. Only problem is -- one of the wounded is a very big turkey, Texas attorney and lobbyist, Harry Whittington. (Now anybody that bags a lawyer deserves a medal, in my humble opinion; but that's another story...)

The truth of the matter is that hunting from a moving vehicle is against the law. Additionally, our brave hunters, VP Cheney, et al, had no license to hunt quail -- another violation!

His punishment? The poor, mistreated criminal had to go back into town and pay the measley $7.00 quail license fee. Now, how's that for law enforcement? Special treatment? Well, you be the judge!

In the mean time, while these bad-assed hunters are satifying their filthy blood lust, our brave young men and women are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan while hunting the real prey -- TERRORISTS -- to preserve the rights of law breaking thugs like VP Dick Cheney, et al!

My hope is that all these bastards rot in hell; but, then again, hell is too good for the likes of these hypocrites!

Posted by Charlie Couser at February 15, 2006 08:12 AM

Cheney shot Witting purposefully or because he was impaired. Cheney had to swing his gun around to his right or left greater than 90 degrees to shoot someone coming up behind him. So the question become "Why?". Think of this, Armstrong doesn't report the problem for hours, literally; lots of mouth wash and gallons of coffee later she leaks the information, and hours after that the Fuzz arrives. Or, alternatively, Cheney's deep in a DepCon 10 video in his head and the enemy came from behind and he blew the enemy away. I wonder what that old lawyer said that got Cheney's goat and he almost (maybe will have) committed murder?

Posted by gem at February 15, 2006 08:41 AM

Don't most Hunters wear hearing protection Anyway? Cheney is wearing a Headset in the photos they show on the news,Blaming the Victim because he did not communicate Verbaly is Crazy! That's why they wear those Bright Orange suits.

Johnny Walker and guns don't mix. 21 Hours before talking to the Deputy Sheriff allows alcohol do be flushed out of system.

Either that or heart medication side effect causes one to become paranoid -

We'll never know the truth as usual.

Posted by Camus at February 15, 2006 09:20 AM

I guess telling Pat Leahy to go fuck himself on the floor of the Senate, wasn't enough for Dick. At least when Bill Clinton shot someone, all it did was leave a stain on a dress.

Posted by Peter Chewning at February 15, 2006 09:20 AM

Cheney has a history of DWI's. Why isn't anyone in the press making a serious effort to look into the possibility that Cheney was probably impaired by alcohol...this concept is particularly supported by the location of the gunshot wounds and the fact that Whittington was behind him and Cheney had to turn around to shoot him...was it deliberate or was Cheney simply impaired??...either way, he should step down from the Vice Presidency. He's a disgrace to the country and truly nothing more than a corporate thug. Years ago (1970's) he was known to other corporate chieftans as "Mr. Fixit" - the guy who got it done...where others "feared to tread" - he was always the fellow who did the dirty work. And he still is....

Posted by Jan Sneed at February 15, 2006 09:45 AM

Maybe the next orange suit he wears, will be in a federal prison.

Posted by yhetti at February 15, 2006 09:57 AM

I suspect that shooting crippled little living decoys just isn't sporting enough. It must frustrate the mighty hunter instincts in great warriors.

While I certainly don't think the shooting was deliberate...it was just more like impatient frustration.

If Ms. Armstrong had been a really savvy Rep. Lobbyist she would have provided Democrats and reporters for our poor VP to aim at...and he wouldn't have had to shoot a personal friend.

It's all her fault!

Posted by Wedjat at February 15, 2006 10:37 AM

Most reports blame the victim, the eternal tactic Bushies keep getting away with to avoid taking any responsibility for their actions.

Remember in the movie "The Shooting Party" a British aristocrat manages to shoot a young man who is their beater with buckshot, killing him. And it's passed off as nothing. The movie indicts the complete moral bankruptcy of the whole upper class system.

Cheney and his tribe live in a fantasy world trying to live out a similar system of lost nobility. He and his cohorts try to recreate a time when an aristocracy lived a privileged life of ease, unearned wealth, and entitlement. And all this was supported by the disempowered masses (that's us, folks, in the USA). It died in England with WWI and this bloody sport of the supposedly divinely ordained 'elect' needs to die here.

Posted by Gretchen Robinson at February 15, 2006 11:08 AM

I wonder if this was an accident and if it was,is Cheney that blind? Why the secret? Because Cheney thinks is accountable to no one, nt even his "boss" the president. Yeah right, Did Bush and Cheney think this would just disappear, like everything else thay have?

Posted by Cindy at February 15, 2006 12:11 PM

If you ask me, the wrong fat cat got shot...

I was thinking along the same lines as Cindy... do people remember who Whittington is? Not that it wasn't an accident, just saying...

The DELAY (no pun intended :) that prevented
local law enforcement/fish & game officers from
interviewing Cheney after the shootingreeks of a cover up.

Obviously panic set in with Cheney and his handlers trying to figure out a way out this. Have the Secret Service flash their badges and say "NO ACCESS" until Dick the Drunk sobers up and
can talk to the law. That at the very least.

The only way this will come out is if one
of the Secret Service boys is brave enough to testify that the Veep was drunk.
Or if Whittington dies, but for his sake, let's hope that isn't in the cards

Posted by jim frievalt at February 15, 2006 12:58 PM

in this day and age of real time reporting and blackberries, it is totally preposterous that it would take almost 24 hours to disseminate this very newsworthy information. quail hunting (if you can call it that) is best accomplished much earlier in the day. to embark on their "expedition" at 4pm when sunset is at 6:19pm is nonsensical. what could the possibly have been doing all day previous to their "great hunt"? does jack daniels ring a bell? to believe that those elite fat cats didn't have a snootful of liquor in them at that time of day is to believe the moon is made of green cheese!!

Posted by canadiantrain at February 15, 2006 01:41 PM

To add a pithy note amongst the others, . . . "If it quacks like a duck, it must be a duck!" Vice President Cheney forgot to scream out to his fellow hunter, . . . "Duck, or I'll shoot ya!" (LOL)

White House spokesman, Scott McClellan stated in a paraphase, . . . 'The White House wants to return their attention back to the priorities of the American people'. If this is being relayed in good faith, then please advise the White House staff members to stop aiming and shooting Americans down one by one, . . . either by Spirit or by force!

Chenye's people were hoping this would Disappear, Like all those Billions of dollers in Iraq.

Posted by sir-real at February 15, 2006 06:15 PM

For a administration saying they were going to restore integrity to the White House they have certainly NOT lived up to those words.

Yet the Democrats are pretty much voiceless in the last couple of weeks. We need to dump Dean and Reid and bring in fresh voices. Reid looks like a mean old man and Dean has the reputation of being a temper tantrum egomaniac.

The Democrats must get their house in order fast.

Posted by Shaun at February 15, 2006 06:20 PM

So now we are supposed to feel sympathy for Cheney? What about the poor suckers who have suffered as a result of the Bush/Cheney debacle in Iraq?
Or the victims of Katrina?
Or for those suffering effects of white phospherous?
Or for those suffering effects of depleted uranium?
Wouldn't some sympathy be more appropriate if it was felt for the thousands of returned servicemen and women who are suffering physical and emotional trauma as a direct result of Bush/Cheney actions?
Or for those who have died for a "Noble Cause"?
A while back I suggested that maybe Cheney and Rumsfeld should be locked up together over extraordinary renditions and torture, Now I think it would be better if they all went along on a hunting expedition.

Posted by David at February 15, 2006 06:28 PM

Ah yes, . . . a hunting expedition with the blind leading the blind! Who can tell what the results would be at the end of their day? Whoops, . . . pardon, . . . no one will tell anything, because they'll all be speckled with pellets from gunfire! Not from each other, but by those hiding behind the "Bushes"!!!

Posted by at February 15, 2006 07:14 PM

If we all wait till they get all there rip off schemes in place were all going to be broke I think its time to send a message we should get as many people together an circle the White House an stay there an demand all them be removed and voted out impeached and pensions revoked make them go back to the places they came from an start all over like we had to do when they closed many of our factories an other businesses they sent to China.

Is Bush an alcoholic who starts drinking at sundown until he passes out and is put to bed? Nothing ever happens for him between 6 and 9pm.

Posted by takingasickday at February 15, 2006 07:35 PM

Presumably, Wittington was rushed to a hospital immediately after being shot. Perhaps someone can explain how someone can be admitted to a hospital with a severe shotgun wound and the cops aren't immediately called? Obstruction of justice applies to all who have a duty to report and fail to do so; D.C., Secret Service, hospital, other members of the party, etc.

Posted by Strength to Strength at February 15, 2006 07:40 PM

When I watched the press conference and Scottie said information was coming in through the night, I reasoned that the victim was in such a shape that they did not know if he would survive. I believe that they knew if they were going to have that catastrophe on their hands they would want to be careful what would be released to the press and when.
Why the release to a local press by a private citizen the following morning is dumbfounding to me. I just read that Cheney in a Fox interview said he stands by that decision. Gee isn't that typical of other major decisions of this Administration, incompetant and/or criminal.

Posted by Marple at February 15, 2006 07:48 PM

Who knows if there was any foul play in the mist, . . . What man goes hunting these days without a drinking companion? Did anyone question if drugs or alcohol was a factor? The obvious tells the public, . . . If this shooting happened to someone who had no title of "special privileges," there would have been an immediate and thorough investigation.

In response to Daryl, . . . "ABSOLUTELY!" We should ALL march and demand the firing of each staff member that has committed perjury against the American Constitution. For you to write: "The whole incident is a tornado in an outhouse. It is just a lot of stink about something that was over in an instant and had no real effect on anyone that wasn't there. Get a life!"

You need to get a heart! Maybe then you will recognize how close to death Whittington came to experiencing. We wonder how you would feel at the age of 78 having pellet fire lodged into your body.

And so, V.P. Cheney defends himself by saying, . . . He "wanted to be sure the first reports were correct," before announcing the shooting to the press. We could guarantee, . . . if there was an explosion that took place in Corpus Christi, Texas, that may have led to injury and/or fatality, there would have been an immediate national "NEWSFLASH" posted.

So why couldn't there be a brief "NEWSFLASH" that read something like this, . . . V.P. Cheney shot and wounded, Mr. Harry Whittington while hunting in Corpus Christi, Texas. Mr. Whittington's health condition is yet unknown. Further details will be given when information becomes available.

Why all the mystery? Why was there such a long delay in reporting what happened?

V.P. Cheney stated, . . . He will feel relieved when Mr. Whittington returns home.

For information, . . . Someone returning home from the hospital does not provide validation of someone returning to one's restored health.

Posted by at February 16, 2006 02:02 AM

We wonder if there will be an investigation and/or any criminal charges filed against V.P. Cheney. Will there be any finacial compensation given to the Whittington family? If so, who's out of pocket expense will it be deleted from? Cheney or the taxpayers?

Oh what a web we weave when we shoot with our eyes closed and wing our way out of trouble, . . .

WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR CHENEY TO REPORT HIS SHOOTING OF WHITTINGTON? PERHAPS CHENEY NEEDED TO GET "A STORY" TOGETHER.

But yet, Cheney still contradicts himself. He first tells Britt Hume on Faux 5 that he knew Whittington for about 30 years and he is a "good friend." Then when Britt Hume's gives question to Cheney, is Whittington a close friend, or friendly acquaintance, Cheney answers, "No, an acquaintance." DA! Which way is the wind flying this bird turd today?

In answer to Britt Hume's question, . . . "Mr. Vice President, how is Mr. Whittington?" "Well, the good news is he's doing very well today. I talked to him yesterday after they discovered the heart problem, but it appears now to have been pretty well resolved and the reporting today is very good."

Cheney stated this comment on 2/15/06, when doctors already released information to the public stating there is a pellet yet remaining in Whittington's heart that they are not removing. We question, . . . Does this sound as though the heart problem has been "pretty well resolved," as V.P. Cheney describes it?

Britt Hume questioned Cheney, . . . "What was he wearing?" "He was dressed in orange, he was dressed properly, but he was also . . . There was a little bit of a gully there, so he was down a little ways before land level, although I could see the upper part of his body when . . . I didn't see it at the time I shot, until after I'd fired. And the sun was directly behind him — that affected the vision, too, I'm sure."

We question, . . . When someone gets shot, don't they usually in an immediate formation, fall or tip? If so, how could Cheney clearly see Whittington "after shooting him, but not before shooting him?" If the sun affected Cheney's shooting, then why did Cheney shoot? An experienced hunter of any nature would first look to get a clear shot of the target before pulling the trigger. NONE of Cheney's explanation derives to make any sense. And why is Cheney giving his description of the shooting to Britt Hume and not to the detectives who should be investigating all witnesses and the true events of the shooting?

"But he was also" what V.P. Cheney? Oh don't bother answering. The truth won't be given away.

In regards to the remaining interview with Britt Hume and V.P. Dick Cheney, we'll leave the reading to the Bush administration. They enjoy fairytales.
