Republicans reward DeLay with plum committee seat

February 9, 2006 01:08 AM / Capitol Hillbillies .

House GOP leaders proved Wednesday that they reward, not punish, corruption by giving scandal-scarred Rep. Tom DeLay, forced to step down as the No. 2 Republican in the House, a coveted seat on the Appropriations Committee.

DeLay, R-Texas, also claimed a seat on the subcommittee overseeing the Justice Department, which is currently investigating an influence-peddling scandal involving disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his dealings with lawmakers. The subcommittee also has responsibility over NASA -- a top priority for DeLay, since the Johnson Space Center is located in his Houston-area district.

"Allowing Tom DeLay to sit on a committee in charge of giving out money is like putting Michael Brown back in charge of FEMA -- Republicans in Congress just can't seem to resist standing by their man," said Bill Burton, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

GOP leaders also named California Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon as chairman of the Education and the Workforce Committee. Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, vacated that post after winning a campaign to replace DeLay.

McKeon is a seven-term conservative who has a generally good relationship with educators. He authored a 2001 law to remove disincentives for workers who would have lost part of their Social Security benefits when switching jobs to become public school teachers.

DeLay was able to rejoin the powerful Appropriations panel _ he was a member until becoming majority leader in 2003 _ because of a vacancy created after the resignation of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif. Cunningham pleaded guilty in November to charges relating to accepting $2.4 million in bribes for government business and other favors.

Why isn't this making headlines? I've yet to see it on any news broadcast.

Let's see. Bush wants 70,00 new science teachers. Delay is going to control the purse strings for NASA and NSF and all other science (reality based) departments of the government. Perfect. All of the scientists can quit or be fired from their government jobs because the executive branch requires that they take faith and the corporate agenda [like not allowing anybody to report on climate change] into account. Delay probably won't fund them anyway. They can then get jobs teaching (as long as they include Intelligent Design in the curriculum). Someday soon the USA will be number one in science again!

The fox is guarding the chicken coop - again.

Once again, the Republican led Congress has spit in the face of a public that is tired of corruption and graft by rewarding DeLay with another coveted position. This alone proves that to be successful in Bush's new America - only those that embrace greed, support corporate America and not the people, are welcome in their culture of corruption. This action defines the Republican Party - and tells us all that whatever they are stating in regard quelling the corruption is nothing more than lip service.

Action is much louder than words - and DeLay epitomizes the losing battle we seem to be fighting. Abramoff and DeLay go way back - two peas in a pod - and allowing Delay to be on a subcommittee overseeing the Justice Department is a slap in the face of Justice - and really defines their agenda. DeLay, like Alito, is the front-line fighters against true democracy - and so far - appear to be winning - and the losers are us, the American people.

It looks like the fight against organized crime has been lost - and found by the Republican controlled Congress. Welcome to the new American Mafia - brought to you By Bush/Cheney and your leadership in Washington. I could acquiesce and kiss the Godfather's hand - but as an individual, can probably kiss my own ass good-bye by refusing to be intimidated and silenced by those that are enemies of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

In this case, it's not a fox, it's a weasel.

Just another punch in the stomach to the democratic way of a once great nation. However, nothing surprizes me anymore. I am glad I don't live in the good old USA anymore. I don't recognize this country.

The downward slide just keeps picking up speed. Like all corruption, the more they get away with, the easier it gets to up the ante. The corruption, and just as important, the chemtrails, made me leave what I now see as a loser of a country, with no hope in sight. I'm glad I left.

The 'Huddled Masses must get off their Muddled Asses.' NO INCUMBENTS. Period. Lots of good must be sacrificed to rid this country of the bad.

This Republican Administration, as well as the Republican Congress that is rubber stamping its' every dictate, has got to go. Enough is enough. Everyone I talk with is just as disgusted as Me. The only solution is to Vote The Bums Out...every last one of them, for they are all infected with the same disease called Greed, and the Love of a Soft Life at our expense. Throw them all out, including all Democrats that have proven to be nothing but lap dogs to the Majority. They have ceased being an Opposition Party, in all respects. Make sure that you vote, starting with Nov.2006.. and make sure that all votes are not merely cast, but counted. Never again a stolen election, not without a fight. We must get rid of this corrupt Administration that is riding roughshod over the American people. Our freedom is at stake. It is past time to clean House..Both Houses..the Congress and the White House. VJS
