NewsMax screwup creates non-event controversy

February 21, 2006 12:18 AM / FUBAR .
By LISA HOFFMAN

It was a simple plaque, the sort handed out every day on Capitol Hill by interest groups showing their appreciation for a legislator's efforts on behalf of their cause.

In this case, it was the Military Order of the Purple Heart organization that presented an award to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., last Thursday.

The nonprofit group honored Clinton for her stewardship of measures calling for a commemorative Purple Heart postage stamp and the establishment of Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Recognition Day, as well as her advocacy for veterans' health care.

But a story on the conservative media outlet NewsMax.com left the impression among some readers that Clinton had been awarded a Purple Heart medal itself by the group.

While the article described her award as "symbolic," its opening sentence implied otherwise. "New York Sen. Hillary Clinton has put in for a Purple Heart award _ and she received the decoration yesterday," the Friday story said.

Angry veterans erupted in protest.

No fans of Clinton to begin with, the upset vets pilloried the Purple Heart group, which is made up of recipients of the military's heart-shaped award to those wounded or killed in combat.

"Of all people, is Jane Fonda next?" retired Marine John Cooney of Jacksonville, N.C., wrote via e-mail to the Purple Heart group after the NewsMax.com story appeared.

Others were outraged that a sacred decoration would be bestowed on someone who sacrificed no blood in war.

"What's next, a Purple Heart for (Texas lawyer) Harry Whittington for being shot by (Vice President) Dick Cheney?" e-mailed Jesse Metheny, who describes himself as an Army infantry veteran.

The Purple Heart group, which calls itself the "keepers of the medal," couldn't agree more.

Ray Funderburk, national public-relations director and a two-time Purple Heart recipient in the Vietnam War, said he shares outrage at the notion that his organization would be complicit in awarding the hallowed medal to anyone unqualified for it.

"The only way any person, including the (nation's) commander in chief, can be given a Purple Heart is if he or she is wounded in combat by an instrument of war inflicted by the enemy," Funderburk said. "To think anyone would believe this organization would belittle or demean the sanctity of the Purple Heart by giving it to a civilian is totally unacceptable."

Clinton was the 15th recipient of the group's "inspirational leadership award." Though aware of the enmity felt by many on the right toward Clinton, the organization decided she deserved recognition, not the least for her efforts since 2002 to get the U.S. Postal Service to issue a Purple Heart stamp and her recent successful push for the service to re-issue it when rates increased this year.

"Each year, Sen. Clinton has introduced legislation that recognizes August 7th as Purple Heart Recognition Day and encourages citizens to learn of the history and importance of America's oldest military award," the group said in announcing the small Capitol Hill ceremony held for her Thursday at which she received the small wooden plaque.

Clinton's office could not be reached for comment Monday. In a statement issued last Thursday, she said she appreciated the honor.

"I consider it a privilege and duty to work on behalf of combat-wounded active-duty service members and veterans, and I will continue to make them one of my top priorities," the statement said.

Funderburk criticized the NewsMax.com article for misrepresenting what the group had done. But NewsMax.com writer Carl Limbacher, who wrote the story, had no apologies and said reader reaction to his story "has been slim to none."

"My guess is that any controversy generated by my report was prompted more by the decision to give Hillary the award than by my coverage per se," Limbacher wrote in an e-mail.

What a crock! Carl Limbacher deliberately used inflammatory phrasing in order to create as much of an uproar as possible simply because the recipient was Hillary. I don't like the woman, but if the actions she took merit the award, then she deserves it. I despise this administration, but felt sorry for the way Cheney was lambasted over a hunting accident. I considered the situation rather than the politics. The problem many so-called Conservatives (aka Republicans) have is that they think no one but their own kind deserves recognition for anything - that no one but them is capable of doing anything of value and that to recognize anyone in the "opposition" is akin to blasphemy....or treason.

Why would the Purple Heart Group be surprised to find themselves under attack, as collateral damage, by ill-informed faux "conservatives?" Have these folks not followed the exploits of the Swift-Boaters?

Expect to see more of this, and expect to see Rush and the other girls talking about it in confusing terms to encourage the thought that it actually happened.

As if we didn't have enought troubles with the republicans! I swear they layawake nights thinking upsetting ways to upset the public. And they get away with it. When are we going to stop it. And how? There is anarchy in the land and nobody notices.

The hypocrisy of the rabid right knows no bounds. They have a faux cowboy complete with practiced bow legs, strutting around in assorted military uniforms years after he went AWOL.

Do they think we have forgoote "Mission Accomplished" with the stuffed crotch?

I should check the typing of my arthritic fingers before posting.... The sentence should read "Do they think we have forgotten "Mission Accomplished................."

Posted by Magginkat at February 21, 2006 10:37 AM

There was no such thing as "Mission Accomplished!" Wake up! That ceremony was for the sake of morale purposes only!

When are Americans going to admit they were victimized from day one of 911? Better yet, when will the American people realize they have been seriously robbed for the last 100 or so years from their friendly political party?

Politicians are not going to rescue you, . . . for they can't even rescue themselves!

Get up on your own two feet, and show them how the job should be done! If not, . . . Then the face of SHAME will be on everyone!

P.S. There is no available cosmetic surgery that can nor will, cover up nor remove, the face of SHAME!

As it was reported in the N.Y. Times, . . . U.S. intelligence agencies have been secretly removing from public access at the National Archives thousands of historical documents that were available for years.

How ironic, the Intelligence agency removing knowledge from the public view! No surprise here. As we have said before, . . . the American government fears the mass that has knowledge!

The knowledge of truth is not only found within the writings of American history. Treasures of Truth are also found available in the word of God. Sadly, there are many people who have revised and removed some of the truth from the KJV of the Holy Scriptures. Those, who have disobeyed God, should know this, . . . Out of fear, comes the visitation of death!

God forbid for anyone to omit or change God's word of Truth! Woe to those who do! These are not our words, . . . these are the words belonging to God.

Why aren't Veterans given individual recognition each year? Veterans are the one's who carry the cross of wounds, on a daily basis. Veterans are the one's who have not only fought and killed in an evil time of war, but then they have to fight with the members of their own government in order to receive necessary assistance. Veterans are the one's who lose their family members when times become unspeakable. Veterans are the one's who live in steady pain from the constant reminder of innocent bloodshed. Veterans are the one's who are most likely to commit suicide. Veterans are the one's who live with the memories of yesterday's wartime through their infirmities. Veterans are the one's who at many times, lose the art of their profession. Veterans are the one’s who are often criticized. All for what? So Senators could receive honors and awards? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING! IF NOT KIDDING, . . . YOU HAVE TO BE INSULTING ALL VETERANS AROUND THE WORLD!

This is absolutely disgraceful and distasteful! It is no surprise to why Senator Clinton wouldn’t publicly respond. We bet she was grateful, . . . But we bet more in the fact, Veterans would have been respectively grateful and would have publicly responded to such.

SHAME ON AMERICA’S POLITICIANS! SHAME-SHAME-SHAME!
