Newest Senator nails Bush on budget

February 11, 2006 03:53 PM / Capitol Hillbillies .
The budget proposed by President Bush adds to middle-class burdens while providing greater benefits for the wealthy and oil companies, Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., said Saturday.

"This is a budget that does more than ignore the problems facing the middle class _ it actually makes them worse," Menendez said in the Democrats' weekly radio address.

Menendez"At the same time, the budget includes a wide variety of handouts to the president's special-interest friends, including billions of dollars of wasteful spending that would help add $4 trillion to our nation's debt," said Menendez, the nation's newest senator.

Menendez served in the House of Representatives for 13 years until Gov. Jon S. Corzine appointed him in January to complete the final year of his Senate term.

Menendez said Bush's budget for 2007, released Monday, would increase college costs "by locking in the largest student aid cut in the history of our nation."

He also said, "It will increase health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs through new schemes that will expand tax shelters for the healthy and the wealthy and drive up costs for the rest of us."

Meanwhile, Menendez said: "The president proposes spending $648 billion on tax breaks for those earning more than $1 million. That's more than six times the amount needed to restore the president's proposed cuts in Medicare."

The budget "rejects Democratic proposals to crack down on oil company price gouging, even though Big Oil has reaped record profits while gas prices have shot through the roof," he added.

Menendez plans to seek a full six-year Senate term, and he is so far unopposed for the Democratic nomination. State Sen. Tom Kean Jr., son of a former New Jersey governor, said he will seek the GOP nomination.

While reading the yahoo news today, there was an article that stated fewer poor students are applying for student aid. Is this a spin being put on to justify the budget cuts for student aid?
I'm really concerned over these cuts cause I will be a returning student (I've been outsourced)and aid is the only way I can do it.
Just think of the wars I can fund by being middle class once again. (sarcasm here)

Doug
There are millions of true patriots in the US.But like gold and diamonds the rarity of those as yourself who have the courage to speak the truth speaks for itself.
We up here have our own "Bush" league politicians for whatever that is worth.
The media who seem to be a new charter organization I call the "Pussy Press" is largely to blame for the lack of accoutability.
Please don't give up the fight--but don't let it get you either.
The best to you and your group.

Who will pay the taxes that pays for this lame govenment, if they destroy the middle class? The poor? It is beginning to resemble the old "serfdom" systems of the middle ages.

Flooding the labor market with "undocumented laborers" allowing the big corporations to move over seas, have "corporate headquarters" offshore, so that they pay no taxes, creates fewer
non-living wage dead-end jobs. Cutting student loans and grants, low wage jobs, practically gaurantees miltary enlistment to continue fighting illegal and unnecessary wars for war profiteering companies such as Haliiburton, Custer-Battles, Bechtel, Exxon-Mobile, Shell, etc. Minimal risk, maximum profit

When even Paul Craig Roberts and Bruce Bartlett are disgusted--both Reagan conservatives who are blasting Bush in columns and books on the economy--then you know things are bleak for America's future.

“Imposter: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy.” The author is Bruce Bartlett, an economist who worked in the Reagan administration.

Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration. He was Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review. He is coauthor of The Tyranny of Good Intentions. He can be reached at: paulcraigroberts@yahoo.com
