Armstrong said Whittington was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Whittington was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System.
Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail late afternoon on Saturday.
Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and found a second covey.
Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong told the Associated Press in an interview.
"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."
The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
She said Whittington was bleeding but not very seriously injured, and Cheney was very apologetic.
"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."
She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington, holding his face and cleaning up the blood.
"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."
Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year. She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.
"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

So Whittington is the guy who replaced the commissioner who presided over investigating a long-time bush friend and owner of SCI - the funeral service corporation involved in that nasty texas-sized scandal over the whistle-blower who got fired (that link above does a better job of explaining this than I do).

In Virginia, a Republican Delegate to the State House of Delegates just "accidentally" shot off his conceled weapon in the General Assembly Building, "luckily" hitting a flak jacket hanging on the wall. Despite his apologies that it was an "accident" while removing the clip from his gun, my guess is that it was intentional -- considering that the odds are something like 150 X 6 / 1 (square feet per wall/floor surface times number of surfaces, divided by rough estimate of exposed size of flak-jacket when hanging on a wall). With odds like 1 out of 900, my guess is that the Delegate was playing around or sending a message.

Many people wear ear protection when shooting. Shouting your new location when behind or even in front of people is considered normal. Possibly the lawyer didn't announce his location (unfortunately, a common problem). If the guy is 6 feet tall and the bird took off at a low angle to the left, it's very possible to be shot on right side if you are to the left of the person, facing him (possibly because he shouted) and the shooter is quickly tracking the bird.
For those of you happy that someone got hurt, shame on you. If you're hypocritcally one of the supposedly more caring "left", double-shame on you. Those of you with lawyer jokes ... ;-)

I'm from the left AND I am a hunter. And this is just a "no excuse" accidental shooting. When hunting birds, and especially when in a group, you should mentally have a picture of your "safe shooting zone" in your mind at all times. Typically this will be no MORE than 160 degrees in front of you (your field of vision not using peripheral vision). It may well be less if others are too close. The way the story reads, Cheney had to turn around to make that shot and that is DEFINITELY outside a normal "safe shooting zone"...and anyone who went to hunter safety classes learns that the responsiblity for an errant shot lies with the person who has his/her finger on the trigger. Period.
I'm sorry but the VP sounds like the kind of guy who grazes the dogs when bird hunting...had he been hunting with my family members, the VP would have had a perforated colon from having his beautiful Italian 28 ga shotgun poked up his rear. If the victim came up from behind, that gun would very likely have also been swung across other members of the hunting party, also. Kudos to Libertarian Bastard's comments. However, the parallel I was trying to draw was not the short-lived German experiment in democracy, but to the methods and means of Nazi Germany. At that time there was intense and zealous "patriotism" which equated to condemnation of any political stance outside that of the nationalistic/conservative right wing, and a political/economic agenda that rationalized the invasions of Czechoslovakia(sp?) and Poland by suggesting that those "evil neighboring countries" were plotting the demise of Nazi Germany. Poland, particularly, was trumped up as preparing for war and thus Germany was vindicated by invading first (Iraq, anyone?).
Anyway, I know that my liveral bias shows and that I've stated things that are beyond the original scope of this Cheney article. i agree, but i don't. I do think pointing out said problems is something necessary, obviously it would be the only way to fix them. I agree as well, in some ways, though I would not support is Iraq example, nor his use of Germany. I also believe in, while pointing out said problems, attempting to maintain some respect for your country. I believe out Government was right in Iraq, though maybe not on specific issues, but I do believe there are more domestic problems that continue to reoccur that out current government is not dealing with (social security, welfare, boarders).
A guy with five draft deferments should probably leave the shooting to someone else. Wait, up to now he has!

Subscription to extremism or cults of personality can contribute to building a bridge to tyranny. Inflexible perspectives and an arrogant presumption of moral exclusivity - I'm sorry, too often associated with conservative extremism - can quickly lead to Naziism, Communism, or Fascism. This country deserves better, and is here now here for us because our ancestors were cautious about damaging our platforms of freedom and human rights. According to the hospital, Harry Whittington was barely scratched by Cheney's broadside. He was place in ICU because of mutiple dog bites when the bird dogs tried to drag him back to Cheney.

If I understand what the WH and the media are saying, Whittington was merely "collateral damage", so he really ought to be OK with getting shot a little now and then. If he has a problem with that, he's probably one of those "liberal terrorist supporters" that Cheney, Rove, and GWB are always warning us about, and therefore ought to be hauled off to Gitmo and "waterboarded", or at least have his phone tapped.
For the sake of argument, let's assume that George and Dick are infallible, God himself has granted them absolute power of life and death over everyone on the planet, and absolutely all of their actions are divinely inspired. I gather these are core conservative tenets these days, so the rest of us certainly have no constitutional right to argue, or at least we'd be smart not to. Therefore Cheney has the right to shoot anyone he pleases, since really he's just the instrument of divine wrath. When God's angry, which is pretty much always, apparently, sometimes he sends a hurricane, and other times it's Cheney with a shotgun.

@Becky: Don't get upset that people point out that the Administration says a lot of the same things that the German government did leading up to the 1939 invasion of Poland.
Rampant nationalism/patriotism is always dangerous. Germany is a glaring example of what can happen when the people allow their leaders to run amok. History records what happened to remind the world to be careful to not let it happen again.
