Dick Cheney's legacy

February 15, 2006 05:25 AM / FUBAR .

By DALE McFEATTERS

In politics, certain unplanned moments can suddenly _ and often unfairly _ crystallize a vague and unformed public impression into a lasting stereotype.

President Bush senior's perplexity at a supermarket scanner that he was an out-of-touch elitist; Vice President Quayle's misspelling of potato that he wasn't too bright; President Ford's stumble that he was a buffoon; President Carter's encounter with a swamp rabbit that he was a wimp.

And now it has happened to Vice President Cheney.

While shooting quail on a Texas ranch, Cheney peppered Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old lawyer, with birdshot. The wound was serious enough that the victim had to be medevaced, and the hospital says it will keep him at least another week. Cheney's hunting companions say the shooting was Whittington's fault. Local law enforcement officials are satisfied it was an accident and regard the case as closed.

It is hardly closed in the rest of the country. Cheney jokes are all over the Internet and the comedy shows, and they distill the impression that -- what with undisclosed secure locations, closed-door meetings with the powerful, a mania for secrecy, an indicted top aide -- that he is a remote, arrogant and even sinister presence in the Bush administration.

Standard Washington practice is that incidents involving the presidency are announced immediately and fully. For whatever reason, the White House deferred to the vice president's office on when and how the shooting would be disclosed, and it's clear that the vice president's inclination was to say nothing.

Presidential press secretary Scott McClellan, the chief information officer of the administration, didn't find out about it until 12 hours after it happened, the public not until 24 hours later and then only because his wealthy hostess, a politically influential lobbyist, phoned the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. The precedent of private citizens announcing delicate news about the vice presidency is not a happy one.

With the vice president's office in stonewall mode, it was left to McClellan to try to spin Cheney's way out of the mess, which he loyally tried to do in several contentious briefings. He doggedly stuck to the script. Asked about the delay in disclosing the incident, he offered the non-answer that "the first priority" had been getting medical care for Whittington. He said it nine times.

Cheney defender former Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming, the vice president's home state, predicted to The New York Times that the incident will be "all through after a few days." Begging your pardon, senator, but it will be in his obituary.

Unfortunately, when 75 year old plus people have traumatic experiences.... it indeed does shorten their lives. Most humans over the age of 75 that suffer trauma die within a few years time... Look it up... its true. SO the VP shortened Harry's life for him... all by accident?
But remember, its DickyDick that flies white unmarked airplanes all over downtown Columbia SC neighborhoods too........

IMO this "incident" is no longer "funny" until and if Mr. Wittington makes a full and complete recovery.

This "QUAIL HUNT" by these so-called AVID HUNTERS was about the exact same as tying a pinata to a tree and beating it with a stick until all the candy fell out.

Between the other hunters, the medics the secret service and God knows who else was along for the ride the real story has to be this, because the REAL CHANCES that ANYTHING like this, with all these players being around could or should have happened is so incredibly remote it cannot be believed.

Cheney hears rustling in the bushes, (tall grass whatever) the bushes are speaking but none the less he is startled and shoots before even a thought. THAT's IN MY OPINION what really happened.

Called Extremely careless in-experienced hunter with a gun syndrome, no matter how much he likes to do it.

One thing no-one has noted. Secret Service protection is SUPPOPSED to be everywhere Cheney goes. IT IS THEIR JOB to be constantly alert and KNOW where everyone is. If ANYTHING was suspected, THEY SHOULD HAVE AIMED AND FIRED FIRST:

Take on this anyone ???

Mr. Wittington is lucky to be alive. Speaking as a person who enjoys the engineering beauty of guns and likes to shot guns, I think the "accident story" is bogus. Think on this: Cheney has to swivel greater than 90 degrees to shoot someone coming up from the back, its getting dark ("well into dusk"?) and he doesn't check his target? It was not an accident. The leak took too long to arrange. Lots of mouthwash and gallons of coffee later, the paper in CC is notified and hours after that the Fuzz arrive. "Alcohol is not involved?" BS. Maybe Cheney was reliving a DefCon 10 video experience and thought Wittington was the enemy. I wonder why it was time for Wittington to die? Was he the enemy?

GEM,
You might be right about the alcohol but IMO the rest is a bit of a stretch. However, that said, isn't it amazing that this Administration and everyone in it is SO BAD that we even give any rise or possible crdibility to these sorts of statements.

Where is Congress?
Democrats in dis-array
Republicans doing CYA

WHERE IS THE PRESS?

Busy covering the paparatzzi covering Britinay
Busy attending Angelina's ultrasound.
Looking for new Muslim cartoons to "create" new sidebars to the Cartoon Caper....because these will write themselves.

Where are 70% of the American People ??

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ !!!
The rest asleep at the switch

It sure does sound like Whittington had to take one for the team. This whole story doesn't make sense. And to quote Judge Judy - "If it doesn't make sense, it isn't true"

Posted by Jane at February 15, 2006 09:07 AM

If Whittington dies, this white house is done. Not that anyone takes them seriously anymore anyways, but having cheney shoot and kill a man will be the last straw for many.

Posted by GWB at February 15, 2006 09:30 AM

Maybe this incident, PLUS the Virginia legislator who "accidentally" fired his "concealed" weapon in the General Assembly building, were just designed to send that message "don't mess with Republicans or you'll get yours....up close and personal."

Posted by Patriot451 at February 15, 2006 09:38 AM

This stinks to high heaven. What was the local
sheriff doing? I can't imagine in a shooting with
injuries that Chenny wasn't interviewed. This guy Chenny has coward written all over him anyway. All that alcohol couldn't be good for his heart condition. He leaves himself open to so much speculation because he runs so secret a
White House and lies so often to the American people. This is just another case where we will
never know the truth, just like the Bush White
House.

Posted by mayflowermike at February 15, 2006 10:40 AM

Why wasn't this reported immediately to the authorities. Is it because Dick Cheney had been drinking and they did not want that to be brought out. He has been charged with DWI's in the past. So what's the real mystery here? Why conceal it?
A question that answers itself.
When are we going to wake up. Obviously Cheney is above the law as well as the American people!

Posted by Cindy at February 15, 2006 12:18 PM

You're right this entire story STINKS!! More likely: DICK cheney was DRUNK or close to it. Or this was a desperate and deliberate attempt to terrorize anyone who gets in DICK's way or on his bad side.

Well I see it this way: If those assholes don't have to obey the Rule of Law, the US Constitution, or the Bill of Rights, neither do the rest of us!! Let's round up the Chimpy Administration and take them out coon hunting!!

Posted by andrew at February 15, 2006 12:30 PM

Just one more instance where these guys can't get it right. I can forgive a hunting accident. What I can't forgive is a liar. This is one more example of Cheney and his ilk being non-responsible for their actions. If I had done this, do you think the local police would have let me walk? The rich are different, I guess. Cheney and Bush apparently do not think they have to answer for anything.

Posted by scott at February 15, 2006 12:48 PM

Seems everyone is missing the point as intended by the spin masters. Someone should be asking who else was on the hunt with the VP. How many no-bid war contractors were there? Or how many were on the secret energy commission? Any lobbists? It's not what happened in the accident that is being covered...those who witnessed it are being shielded.

Posted by at February 15, 2006 02:36 PM

Why do you suppose they would be shielding those attending the hunt?

Posted by at February 15, 2006 03:03 PM

Cheney nor Bush are accountable for anything they do.......

Posted by Paulzee at February 15, 2006 03:04 PM

I don't buy the drunk tale because Cheney is a very sick man who has to have a medical team travel with him on the taxpayer dime and is on various heart meds. Mixing alcohol with heart meds puts him at risk to dangerous side effects.

Posted by Kim at February 15, 2006 04:10 PM

How much time did the secret service and US government medical employees spend attending this "private citizen" and should Cheney pay restitution so that we the tax payers aren’t subject to paying for the negligence of Cheney while on personal time? I expect the tax payers will get screwed again!!!

Posted by TJH at February 15, 2006 07:20 PM

Dangerous side effects like blasting your friend?........I agree with GEM this dudes lucky to to be alive!

Posted by chumpy at February 15, 2006 09:39 PM

The only reliable observations one can make about this fiasco are:

1) We are not likely to know anytime soon, if ever, what really happened on that fateful Sunday afternoon.

2) Obviously, the so-called president, the boy-emperor, is not in charge. That's something most of us have known for five years, but how much more obvious could it be.

3) There is little Cheney and the Repug propaganda machine can do to undo the damage. Cheney shot a guy in the face, but the Dems may well shoot themselves in the foot over this. They have lots of practice. In any case it makes wonderful theater. Too bad the guy who got shot is evidently a reasonably decent guy, or at least as decent as Repugs can be.

This whole episode is starting to look and sound like a similar tragic incident from several years ago. That one involved a certain U.S. Senator accidentally driving off a bridge late at night on Martha's Vinyard.

Posted by keith at February 15, 2006 10:27 PM

What's all the fuzz about Dick Cheney shooting a fellow hunter? Dick could never shoot straight.

Posted by Samuel T. Romero at February 16, 2006 01:02 AM

- drunk
- shoting from a vehical
- no license

We will now never know ....

These guys ledi about 911. They lied about the Iraq war, they lied about the Lume leak .... So certainly they can lie about this too.

Vote Democatrat at the mid terms ... them impeach ...

WARNING: Don't put Cheney in the front line of the fire zone of warfare. He might just shoot his commrade between the eyes before looking into them!

WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR CHENEY TO REPORT HIS SHOOTING OF WHITTINGTON? PERHAPS CHENEY NEEDED TO GET "A STORY" TOGETHER.

But yet, Cheney still contradicts himself. He first tells Britt Hume on Faux 5 that he knew Whittington for about 30 years and he is a "good friend." Then when Britt Hume's gives question to Cheney, is Whittington a close friend, or friendly acquaintance, Cheney answers, "No, an acquaintance." DA! Which way is the wind flying this bird turd today?

In answer to Britt Hume's question, . . . "Mr. Vice President, how is Mr. Whittington?" "Well, the good news is he's doing very well today. I talked to him yesterday after they discovered the heart problem, but it appears now to have been pretty well resolved and the reporting today is very good."

Cheney stated this comment on 2/15/06, when doctors already released information to the public stating there is a pellet yet remaining in Whittington's heart that they are not removing. We question, . . . Does this sound as though the heart problem has been "pretty well resolved," as V.P. Cheney describes it?

Britt Hume questioned Cheney, . . . "What was he wearing?" "He was dressed in orange, he was dressed properly, but he was also . . . There was a little bit of a gully there, so he was down a little ways before land level, although I could see the upper part of his body when . . . I didn't see it at the time I shot, until after I'd fired. And the sun was directly behind him — that affected the vision, too, I'm sure."

We question, . . . When someone gets shot, don't they usually in an immediate formation, fall or tip? If so, how could Cheney clearly see Whittington "after shooting him, but not before shooting him?" If the sun affected Cheney's shooting, then why did Cheney shoot? An experienced hunter of any nature would first look to get a clear shot of the target before pulling the trigger. NONE of Cheney's explanation derives to make any sense. And why is Cheney giving his description of the shooting to Britt Hume and not to the detectives who should be investigating all witnesses and the true events of the shooting?

"But he was also" what V.P. Cheney? Oh don't bother answering. The truth won't be given away.

In regards to the remaining interview with Britt Hume and V.P. Dick Cheney, we'll leave the reading to the Bush administration. They enjoy fairytales.

The old bastard was drunk and with another woman..
Harry should have shot him....

Posted by at February 17, 2006 12:17 AM

That leads to question, . . . Who was hunting for what in the woods? Who was hunting for quail, and who was hunting for "some fun" with "some Ale?"
