Thinly disguised pleas for fairness in assessing Cheney's accident are inappropriate given the Veep's sneering lack of concern for the murderous practices of this administration on the international scene.
Cheney and his puppet Bush, are guilty of war crimes by even the most generous interpretation of the rules and deserve no sympathy whatever unfortunate mishap befalls either of them..... and I pray daily to that end.
Cheney's eventual "acceptance of responsibility" means exactly what? Is it as meaningful as Bush's acceptance of responsibility for the response to Katrina? What consequences follow from these admissions of "responsibility"?
The conduct of the investigation into this accident illustrates, once again, the two types of justice in this country. One for the rich and well-connected and another for the cannon fodder.

As Jack Nicholson would say, this piece is just so much "bovine residue".
"It may be a miracle that the 78 year old hunting companion was not felled permanently, leaving the vice president utterly devastated the rest of his life." Oh puh-leeze! Cheney's got the blood of 2000 plus American soldiers and countless thousands of Iraqi civilians on his hands. He doesn't seem to be losing any sleep over that fact. He's still defending it! ( The same way he's defending the time lag in reporting this incident. )
The only sense in which Whittington could be called Cheney's "friend" is the fact that he won't sue him over this.
Yes, this IS a cover-up and yet another example in the long line of imperial hubris from this administration. The utterly laughable "investigation" into the accident is heinous. Would the average citizen finding himself in this situation been treated so deferentially? I think not. Sadly, this is just another confirmation that Cheney IS "above the law".
Mr.Thomasson needs to peddle his "bovine residue" in another venue. I'm not buying it.

You make a few good points ... however, I'd like to add these to your thoughts while you are condemning Americans, for being, what I feel is, understandably upset over this delay.
The "he did not announce himself came from the WHITE HOUSE ... not Ms. Armstrong
Ms. Armstrong, DID however, let it 'slip' that there had been drinking ... she tried to cover it up ... but if you put the 'pieces' together ... you get a clear picture ... it is THAT information ... along with the fact the police WERE NOT ALLOWED ACCESS to Cheney until 14 hours later ... which is also the time it takes alcohol to leave the blood system BTW ... how very convenient
NO ONE expects Cheney to contact 'the' media before attending to the victim ... but we DO resent the 'downplay' and 'secrecy' of the whole matter. If you or I had done what Cheney did ... we'd be posting bail ... EVERYONE ... but Cheney ... KNOWS ... YOU CALL THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY ... AND YOU TALK TO THEM ... FACE TO FACE ... unless you have something to hide.
He did not even tell BUSH in a timely manner ... what ??? Shooting someone while hunting is 'no big deal' ??? Seems to me, it would have been 'important' enough to tell him immediately ... not only because of being such public figures ... but just common behavior ... if I have a crisis ... my friends and family are the FIRST people I turn to ... and I would think shooting someone would fall into that category.
This 'above the law' attitude is WHY this is such a 'big' deal ... he didn't even have an up to date hunting license ... and combine all this with the downplay of the man's injuries ... "he was 'peppered' with birdshot" sure sugar coats the reality doesn't it ???
Americans are simply tired of this Administration acting as if it can do 'anything' it pleases ... and to hell with us 'peons'

Give me a break. I am disappointed this is published here. Lack of compassion in the American people? How about a lack of compassion in a VP who went to the ranch for a drink and dinner rather than going to the hospital after he shot a guy.
No evidence of a cover-up? With buddies doing a delayed investigation that did not involve a site investigation or immediate interviewing of the witnesses?
I am particularly offended by the reference to the Kennedy cover-up. It's a distraction technique that serves none of us. That was wrong and this is too. It doesn't help us deal with the issues when a Republican outrage is excused because a Democrat did the same thing. Neither is acceptable in my book. We should hold our leaders accountable in the same way people who lack their connections are held accountable. The hunting story doesn't add up, and I'm grateful that some of the press is exploring that. I just wish they would have asked the hard questions sooner about issues that have broader impact.

Thirty yards and this kind of damage from bird shot? How much medication is Dick on? How many beers mixed with this? Another B movie and any kid can see through this one.

"Give me a break. I am disappointed this is published here."
It is published here because Capitol Hill Blue publishes opinions from all points of view. We are not a partisan web site and we recognize there are differing opinions on issues. That's what democracy and a free press are all about. If you want single point-of-view writing you will not find it here.

Well you published it Doug and it's still bullschitt! If Cheney is as innocent as this writer claims, then one can't say much for his judgement in seemingly covering up or hiding something.
But then as someone else noted, we can see how much concern Tricky Dick #2 has displayed for all the people murdered in Iraq because of his bald faced lies.
I wonder if those heart surgeries & the medications aren't causing a little brain damage in the VP?

And I will keep publishing different points of view. This is not Daily Kos or DU where only Democratic points of view are welcome or NewsMax or Free Republic where the right-wing reigns.
I believes both parties are equally corrupt and neither deserves to be in Congress or the White House.

"It is published here because Capitol Hill Blue publishes opinions from all points of view."
I can see the merit in that policy and the comments provide the opportunity for readers to point out fallacious arguments. But I wonder where going for balance should stop. There are still people who think we found WMD's in Iraq. Should that be published?
I think of Democracy Now that reports about corruption on both sides but would not present a report with so little substance without at least having an expert to counter it. Of course, CHB does editorial pieces which they don't, so perhaps my comparison is not valid. But I believe the question of where seeking balance should stop is a valid one.
I do have another question for you, Doug. Are there some members of congress and some officials you think are true public servants? I have a few I think may be, but I'd like your perspective being closer to the scene than I.

Posted by dave at February 17, 2006 09:18 AM
Doug,we WANT you to publish differing points of view-that and the "Rant" are what makes this site different and better than most.
I think it's just that a clear majority of the American people( regardless of party affiliation) feel that Cheney's actions and conduct after the accident are indefensible. So were Teddy Kennedy's.
This is NOT a partisan issue. What's at issue here is that a Vice President of the United States acted in a dishonest manner with blatant and callous disregard for the law and for his position as a servant of the American people.
I think you'll find outrage from both party affiliations. This was a stunning display of dishonesty and lack of character from an elected official. We ALL deserve better - Republican OR Democrat !!!
Posted by kiki at February 17, 2006 09:28 AM
I have a feeling that Cheney's little heart to heart with Brit was less about Whittington and more about being a springboard for his 'Executive Order' announcement. It was a convenient means to an end.

The article is pure hogwash, of the sort we are accustomed to seeing - and seeing 40% of the "polled public" swallow whole - from every facet of this worst-ever administration.
As to whether you should publish it? To me, it's worth it for its pure entertainment value. In a way, it's funnier than, say, 'Boondocks.'

The thing that has not been discused is that, regardless of what the Bush administration thinks, the president and vice president are responsible to the people! Anything that affects either of them in a way that might cause a change in their ability to conduct OUR business should be out on the table quickly. This event just shows the contempt in which the whole administration holds the average citizen of the U.S.

I defer to Alan Dershowitz, who says that any attorney would tell you to wait 14 hours to make sure any alcohol had left your system. Would you do any differently if you could?
Posted by mr.ed at February 17, 2006 11:02 AM
The issue of Cheney is NOT the issue here. The issue of Cheney has been settled. Cheney HAS SHOWN HIMSELF TO BE A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR!! There is no reason to suspect ANYTHING he says is true.
So, what is the issue? The issue is whether there is going to be a United States Constituional Republic as put together by the Founding Fathers of this nation. Either Cheney (and everything that he and the neo-con Straussian crowd around him go) or the Nation goes. It's one or the other. This nation cannot survive half-Republic and half-Fascist dictatorship!! The good news is that it looks like Cheney is going to go first before the nation. He WILL BE FINISHED FIRST!!
By the way, was that a KILLER MILLER beer he drank at lunch? The obvious point..... the time he "ducked" out of sight is exactly the time the alcohol would have gone out of his system--- so his actions speak much LOUDER than any LYING WORDS out his mouth.
Suggested reading for Cheney on his way OUT of office: Read a play called, "MacBeth" by a fellow very influential in the founding of this Constitutional Republic, William Shakespeare. And, if Dick doesn't understand it, he can ask his very cultured wife, Lynne, "Lady Macbeth" Cheney to explain the ending to him.
Posted by Gerald Pechenuk at February 17, 2006 11:07 AM
The Cheney incident is indeed troubling. Not only is there the vexing question about alcohol consumption, which could be managed by allowing the alcohol to metabolize before the V.P. allowed a personal interview with authorities. We are not children, Dick. We can see through this ploy. Also, the possible presence of alcohol in the V.P.'s bloodscreen might explain why he chose to stay at the ranch and drink a cocktail and eat roast beef, rather than follow his victim to the hospital. Either Cheney was hiding something or he is an incredibly callous person. Either way, his behavior was disgraceful.
Furthermore, there is a conflict in the timeline of the incident. On the one hand, initial reports recorded the shooting happened around 6:30 p.m., and yet Ms. Armstrong claimed the incident happened well before 6 p.m. Why the discrepancy? Was it dark or not? And if the timeline changes as to the time of the shooting, why wait so long to call an ambulance?
Ms. Armstrong's eyewitness account is not very convincing. Not only does she claim to see the whole incident from her car 100 yards away, she claims she could see Mr. Whittington was responding and was fine, whereas V.P. Cheney claimed Whittington was stunned and unresponsive.
Finally, this whole incident is an appalling reminder of how corrupt and unequal our legal system truly is. Who among us could shoot someone and then dictate when we would consent to be interviewed by law enforcement? Yes, we all know that there is one rule for the powerful and well-connected and another for the rest of us mere citizens, but Cheney's behavior epitomizes the supreme arrogance and lack of accountablity that characterizes this corrupt and reckless regime.

Brilliant scenario. Apparently that was the only other option to what really took place?
Or how about:
9:00 p.m. Saturday evening...
"Hello, New York Daily Blab?"
"Yes"
"There will be a White House press conference at 11:00 p.m. this evening. You may want to have someone there."
"OK, thanks for letting us know."
11:00 p.m. Saturday evening...
"The vice-president was involved in a hunting accident today where the vice-president injured one of his hunting partners. The man is in the hospital, and is reportedly in stable condition. I'll have more details later as they become available. I can't answer any questions at this time because I don't have any details beyond what I've told you already. Thanks for coming."
10:00 am Sunday morning...
"Thanks for coming again. As you're all aware, the vice-president was involved in a hunting accident." (repeat of previous press conference info)
"In addition, we also know now that the man injured is Harry Whittington, a friend of the v.p., and is still in stable condition....blah blah blah...."
An absurd scenario? The REAL truth is that at this stage of his life, as you say, Richard Cheney doesn't have the character or conscience to handle the situation even like a responsible adult, much less like an administration official who presides over the senate of the United States.
But hey, go ahead and blame it on the press, defend this administration to the very end. Do your damnedest to justify anything pachydermal in the spirit of "team" politics. God forbid you should put the welfare and future of the country before your own partisan fanaticism. After all, getting those Bush/Cheney bumperstickers off your car without leaving a glue patch behind is a real bitch...

I have a question that is slightly off topic but not completely. Does anyone know much about LaRouche? He and his people have been making it their mission in life to get rid of Cheney for a long time. They call and update me and ask me for money, and I'd like an informed opinon about them. I certainly agree with their goals, but they seem kind of trippy. Any takers on this question?

Let me get this straight. If someone dies, and it involves driving, and there is an 11 hour delay in reporting, it IS a coverup?
But if someone ALMOST dies (such as getting a shotgun pellet close enough to touch your heart) and it involves shooting a gun, there is NO coverup, even if the delay is LONGER?
Oh yeah, you are making total sense now. Are you sure you didn't forget your medication? Or did you have a beer for lunch with all your heart meds? I hear that can make you a bit woozy for several hours.
So to sum up your argument, "coverup" is ONLY related to people dying? No death, no coverup? I must have missed that part of the definition of a coverup. Thanks for letting America know the latest "re-versioning" of terms as set out by the RNC.

I think Rush Limbaugh summed it up when he said, "Would you rather go hunting with Dick Cheney or get a ride home from Ted Kennedy?"
Give it a rest. The Secret Service notified the local sheriff but he decided not to send out a deputy until the next day. That shows how important it was.

V.P.Cheney make show his badge of 'special privileges' before law enforcement, but V.P.Cheney has no badge to show that will assist him escaping from God's reigns!
As God speaks and says, . . . 'I will laugh at your calamity'. So be it.
But God also says to us, . . . 'I will have mercy on those that I will have mercy on'. So be it.
But sorry V.P.Cheney, . . . even Apostle Paul suffered prison time when he did not follow the commandments of God. So why shouldn't you?
Belief is, . . . God will have mercy on those who are broken hearted, not on those who are puffed up and arrogant.

Hey Dave, so you say, . . . "Give it a rest. The Secret Service notified the local sheriff but he decided not to send out a deputy until the next day. That shows how important it was. It's over and no liberals were tortured or killed."
Hey Dave we say, . . . You are an obnoxious fly! Go away you ignorant speck of indigestion!
Where do find the audacity to say, law enforcement didn't find it important to visit with V.P. Cheney, and that the incident is over? Were you there? Are you with the victims’ family? Are in the hospital room visiting with Whittington? Are you in the company of the public officials who have mud on their face? Oh yeah, my bad, you're that obnoxious fly on the wall.
Well then, can you please inform those who are being mislead and lied to, of the factual events that occurred on that infamous day when V.P. Cheney didn't follow the mandated hunting rules, laws, and instructions?
C’mon now Dave, don’t give up on your fellow American now, . . . we’ll spare splattering your beady eyes on the wall if you share with us, . . .
Hey no big deal, . . . killing a fly isn’t like killing a liberal, is it?
Dave, do you know what the word liberal is compared to? The word liberal is in common of being ‘free hearted’. So we guess losing a fly isn’t equaled to losing a liberal, . . . is it?

Let's not get fully side tracked, . . . V.P.Cheney left the scene of a crime without first reporting it to law enforcement. Under man's written law, this is a punishable violation. So where has the punishment been enacted?
Someone please remind me, . . . IF and when I am to "accidentally" inflict severe injury upon someone, that I don't have to remain at the scene and report it. Also, please remind me, that there are no costly penalties given for my negligence and incompetency. Here, I'll make my request real simple, just plainly remind me, . . . 'Assaulting someone in America is permissible by law'.
Easy enough? Oh yeah, . . . it was real easy for V.P. Cheney!

On tonight’s appearance of 'Newshour', it was heard by Gloria Borger, "This was a simple hunting accident." A simple hunting accident? Miss Borger must be in a state of delusional mind! She must think the public is all just first grade students. Pardon, but we are intelligent viewers, and what our eyes are telling us is, . . . Our government officials have abused life and the unfortunate harm of others for a detrimental amount of time.
Miss Borger also claims (like so many others in the defense corner of the Bush administration), V.P. Cheney wanted to get the facts before reporting. The fact remains, . . . V.P. Cheney shot and wounded a fellow hunter to a level of seriousness emergency care was called upon. What other facts did V.P. Cheney feel he needed to be prepared with before reporting his actions? The truth is, . . . V.P. Cheney did not want the true condition to be known. Period!
Miss Borger also claimed the statement of saying, . . . "V.P. Cheney is the most powerful and influential V.P. she has ever seen." If this was true, he wouldn't have hid himself from the public, and from the truth.
Gloria Borger reported to say, . . . that there was no 'Plan B" within the Bush administration in regards to Whittington suffering a heart attack. Of course not. The truth once again caught the government by surprise! This is why it took a day or so to get 'Plan A," out to the public, . . . (V.P. Cheney's story telling of the events leading to his shooting against Whittington).
It was also stated on 'Newshour', it has been more than two hundred years since a V.P. or a President shot someone. Excuse, but we are not ALL deaf, dumb, and blind to the facts. NOT ALL SHOOTINGS AND ASSASSINATIONS GET REPORTED. Most likely, if V.P. Cheney had things his way, he would have rather left the scene of his actions in a full term, not just for a day or so.
Why is that people like Miss Borger believe the public should not know what is going on? Who are they to run and rule "LIFE" without the rest of the runners? Without the panel of society, there would be no one watching them, for they must bore themselves and each other with their inept and idle chatter. Why does the public watch such foolishness? So we can discern and screen out the wise from the fools, the truth from the fiction, the good from the bad.
So now in summary, . . . As it is true to agree with, . . . V.P. Cheney is not a Vice as one may place his position of being behind President Bush. V.P. Cheney is a 'Co-President' in a stance 'with' President Bush. So with this being the case in fact, we question, . . . Within the results of President Bush becoming an impeached President, does V.P. Cheney then become an impeached 'Co-President?
Perhaps this is in part of the reasoning to why V.P. Cheney was found visiting in his hometown, Wyoming. Securing his base, and securing his position is vital at this time, . . . Someone needs to attempt in putting the blinders on people before EVERYONE gets to see the truth and has both men before the same impeachment trial!

Lets not allow the Dick Cheney hunting incident to become yesterday's news. There are still important questions that need to be answered.
Just how much did he have to drink?
How long was he drinking?
Why did they take 18 hours before the shooting was reported?
Was it because Dick Cheney needed 18 hours to sober up?
Was he drunk when he shot?
What if he becomes president?
Why isn't the press asking these questions instead of me?
If it were a democrat VP who shot someone while hunting you can be sure there would be full scale reporting and editorializing happening in our Republican controlled press now.
Posted by beelzabubb at February 18, 2006 08:25 AM
What the Cheney “private” incident clearly exposed is the fact that as far as our politicians are concerned, they are not accountable to any one but themselves or their close circle of affluent contributors.
No public servant is justified in claiming the privacy privilege being claimed these days. Doing so is hypocritical as long as the taxpayers are the employers.
Furthermore, politicians are so confident that they can easily manipulate the masses that they are unafraid of displaying the “I am better than you” arrogance that has become common practice in Washington.
As long as our election laws favor incumbency and permits only a small affluent minority to represent us, all the polarized right-left ranting will do nothing to return the power to the people, a fact well understood and exploited by the minority.
We, Americans, have the power to make the electoral changes that are necessary, history has revealed repeatedly that the elite; the intellectuals; the extremists; the controlled media and the political bullies are nothing more than fearful little wimps when the people have flexed their muscles and demanded true reforms.

Question, . . . If to be correct, didn't VP Cheney say the sun may have effected his accuracy when he shot Whittington? Well, if the news is correct, the shooting happened near 6:30 p.m., . . . at that time, where is the sun in Texas? Isn't it down for the day by then?
P.S. "WE the people" are not the minority, . . . "We the people," are the majority,". . . so why aren't "We the people," acting like it?
Former President Nixon stated, . . . "If the President does it, it is not illegal" "We the people," say, . . . We think “NOT!”
